Close battle for MCAL soccer dominance

Novato, Redwood play to tie; San Rafael wins in shutout

The boys soccer teams from Novato and Redwood High met on Saturday with first place on the line. Nothing was decided after 80 minutes as the teams battled to a 2-2 stalemate. Osvaldo Real scored both goals for the Hornets (4-12, 4-1-2), who sit in a firstplace tie with San Rafael on 14 points.

Redwood (5-2-2, 4-1-1) was coming off a 3-0 win against MC on Friday night, with goals from Jack Middleton, Thomas Griffin and Ensio Sardans.

• Liam Hadden scored a hat trick to lead Terra Linda to a 5-0 victory against Marin Catholic (28-2, 1-6-0) on Saturday. Kleber

Maldonado scored the other two goals for the Trojans (4-0-1, 4-0-1) and assisted on one of Hadden's goals. Rafa Gonzalez had a pair of assists and Chris Maldonado had one. TL sits a point back of first place with 13 points but has a game in hand.

• Anton Della Valle and Luca Genovese scored goals to lead Archie Williams to its first win of the season, a 2-1 victory against San Marin (2-5-2, 0-5-2). Cole Sullivan added an assist for the Peregrine Falcons (1-42, 1-4-1).

• Five different Bulldogs found the back of the net as San Rafael kept it rolling with a 5-0 win against Branson (2-6-3, 1-4-2) on Saturday. Juan Hernandez, who had scored or assisted in every game he's played in to date, scored inside 15 minutes to put San Rafael (4-1-4, 4-1-2) ahead 1-0. Norman Tellez scored as the Bulldogs went into the half ahead 2-0. Daniel Rodas, Benjamin Rodas and Jordy Neville had secondhalf goals. Daniel Rodas set up one goal and Kevin De Leon had two assists.

• Malcolm Zalayet netted the opening goal then capped the scoring as Marin Academy (3-1-1) picked up a 3-0 victory against Tam (5-2-1). Zalayet pressed Tam's back line, won the ball and scored to make it 1-0 then made it 3-0 on an assist by Jake Ostrander. Dominic Yu chested the ball in after River Jones hit the crossbar with a free kick for the second goal.

Girls soccer

Maya Greenholz scored a pair of goals and set up another as Redwood defeated Novato 5-0 on Saturday. Greenholz played a role in each of the first three goals, scoring the first and third on assists by Colette Boyden and Dakota Ledesma, respective­ly. Greenholz assisted Ruby Churton on the second goal. Charlotte Lacy and Caroline O'Donnell capped the scoring, on assists by Ledesma and Maddie Buck, respective­ly. Redwood (6-1-2, 4-0-2) moved ahead of Tam and into second place with the result.

• Ally Hsieh scored a pair of first-half goals to help Branson to a 4-0 win against San Rafael (0-100, 0-7-0). Sophia Duran extended the lead to 3-0 then Sophie Arnal capped the scoring for first-place Branson (10-0-1, 6-0-1) in the 76th minute. Gaby Steele assisted both goals in the second half.

• Emmy Bergen and Zola Thurston scored goals as Archie Williams picked up a 2-0 win against San Marin (2-4-1. 2-4-1). Belen Hitchcock had the shutout in goal for the Peregrine Falcons (52-1, 4-2-1). Phoebe Morf assisted on Thurston's goal.

• Maren Jones scored a goal to give Tam (5-2-1) the lead at the half before

Montgomery rallied in the wind and rain for a 3-1 victory on Saturday.

• Marin Catholic (5-2-2, 4-2-1) secured a 2-0 victory against Terra Linda (2-41, 1-4-1). No further details were available at press time.

Boys basketball

A long 3-pointer at the buzzer by senior Gytis Gervickas gave San Domenico a 56-55 victory over Urban on Saturday. The Panthers (14-2, 1-0 BCL West) took an 11-point lead into the break before the Urban Knights clawed their way back into the game with a strong second half and took the lead on a pair of free throws with 3.6 seconds left. San Domenico senior Point Guard Matas Burinskas took the ball out of bounds and found Gervickas rushing up the sideline. Gervickas launched a 28-foot shot over two defenders at the wire. Gervickas finished with 19 points, while Gavin

Early tallied 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Girls basketball

In a matchup of two of the top teams in the MCAL, San Marin stumped Branson 63-44 as Selina Ruano and Keeley Wright led the Mustangs with 11 points each. Kate O'Hara finished with 10 points for San Marin (124, 5-1), which sped out to a 18-9 first-quarter lead and held off the Bulls for the rest of the game.

Hannah Golan led the Bulls (6-8, 3-2) with 14 points and Avery Myerberg had 12.

Women's basketball

Aulani Leomiti scored a team-high 12 points and Victoria Claros added 11 points to lead College of Marin past Bay Valley Conference foe Los Medanos 56-49 on Saturday. Kayley Armstrong pulled down 13 rebounds for the Mariners (11-6, 3-2).
