Montana Super Bowl jersey sells for record

- Wire services

Joe Montana, at age 66, has broken a record held by Tom Brady.

The jersey worn by Montana in two 49ers Super Bowl victories has sold for a record $1.212 million, more than doubling the previous record price for a football jersey sold at auction.

Montana wore the red No. 16 jersey in Super Bowl XIX, a 38-16 win over the Dolphins in January 1985, then wore the same jersey again in Super Bowl XXIII, a 20-16 win over the Bengals four years later, which featured “The Drive”, a 92yard march in the game's final minutes capped by Montana's winning touchdown pass to John Taylor.

The morning of the 1989 game, Montana found the jersey with a note from his wife Jennifer: “Maybe you want to wear it again.”

Montana, wearing a jersey that was slightly different from the one donned by his teammates, led the team on “The Drive” — a 92-yard march in the game's final minutes to turn a three-point deficit into a victory — to capture his third Super Bowl win.

The jersey was sold by memorabilia marketplace Goldin, which also sold a Brady Buccaneers jersey for a record $480,000 last year.
