Republicans will never rebuild trust in Marin
In his recently published commentary (“Credit Marin GOP leaders for outreach to bolster ranks in the North Bay,” March 15), Dick Spotswood urges the Marin County Republican Central Committee to “gain local credibility” by acknowledging that President Joe Biden was duly elected. But Chairman Jack Wilkinson, in his letter posted on MarinGOP.org, appears to be miming the discredited national party by repeating petty falsehoods. I think the association with Donald Trump and the national GOP destroys any local credibility.
Spotswood offers an implausible roadmap toward rebuilding the Marin GOP. He appears to be yearning for the day of the socially liberal, fiscally conservative, honest Republican — he even mentions local former politicians like former state legislators Bill Bagley and Dr. Bill Filante. It's true that they saw the value of compromise, but both those men served many decades ago.
What have Republicans served up since then? I worry that they are focused on ignoring popular demands for gun control, reproductive rights, voting rights and social inclusivity. I am concerned that Republican politicians pander to corporate interests to our collective detriment.
I believe Republican “reforms” had a hand in recent train and bank crashes. Considering that, why would Spotswood urge a revival of this failed and corrupt enterprise?
Instead of asking the Marin GOP to change its stance on the 2020 election, Spotswood should admit that the Republican Party can never rebuild trust in Marin. Those seeking election as Republicans should be spurned.
