Dominican men's hoops win on last-second jump shot

Dale Currie hit a shot with 1 second left to lift the Dominican University men's basketball team to a 74-72 win against Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday.

Currie initially broke a 70-70 tie with a lay-up with 30 seconds left. Monterey Bay made a lay-up with 18 seconds left to re-tie the game setting the stage for Currie's winner.

Currie tied for team-high honors with 15 points. Marcus McCutchen also scored 15 for the Penguins (2-3). Carter Plousha scored 14 points and Nathan Ilunga added 13.

Dominican also defeated Cal State East Bay 67-62 on Friday night. Currie (18 points), McCutchen (17) and Plousha (13) again led the way offensivel­y.

Currie scored with 90 seconds left to pull the Penguins within 60-59 then Ilunga

had a dunk to give Dominican the lead for good. Brendon Johnson went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line to see out the victory.

Branson School point guard Joaquin Aguillon announced via social media on Friday that he has committed to playing for Macalester College next season. Aguillon helped lead Branson (28-4) to MCAL and North Coast Section Division III titles last season as a junior. The Bulls are scheduled to open their season next Saturday

at Archbishop Mitty in San Jose.

College of Marin (2-5) dropped its second consecutiv­e game, an 81-55 defeat against Skyline on Friday night.

Women's basketball

Dominican University won both of its games at the Cal State Monterey Bay Crossover, defeating San Francisco State 80-54 on Friday then downing the hosts 77-64 on Saturday.

Jenna Duley paced the Penguins (3-1) with 18 points against Monterey Bay. Keyonee Neal added 14 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Muirae Gomez scored 12 points.

Duley posted team-highs of 17 points and four steals against San Francisco State. Andraya Perez added 13 points and six assists.

Isobel Crosswhite scored 30 points to lead College of Marin to its fourth consecutiv­e win, a 67-63 victory against Santa Barbara City College on Friday. Crosswhite hit 11 of her 24 shot attempts and pulled down 13 rebounds for the Mariners (4-2). Crosswhite is averaging 19.8 points and 16.3 rebounds per game this season.

College baseball

Current San Marin High standout Anthony Scheppler recently announced via social media that he has committed to playing for Ohio State next season.

Scheppler was an allMCAL first-team selection as a junior for the 2022 season after batting .310 with 27 hits, eight home runs and 21 RBIs for the Mustangs. Scheppler is currently playing for San Marin's undefeated football team. The tight end has 34 catches for 450 yards and three touchdowns this season.
