Vasquez double-double vaults Giants to win

Redwood boys hand San Ramon Valley first loss

Jake Vasquez continued his strong start to the season with a 27-point, 11-rebound performanc­e on Tuesday night to lead the Redwood High boys basketball team to a 62-52 win against San Ramon Valley.

BJ Fisher scored 13 points for the Giants (4-0), which handed San Ramon Valley (3-1), one of the topranked teams in the Bay Area, its first loss of the season.

Lach Kelly scored 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting for Redwood while Brennan Woodley added nine points.

Girls basketball

Three Marin Catholic players scored in double figures but the Wildcats fell to high-powered Archbishop Riordan, 6259, Tuesday night. The Wildcats received 18 points from Cecily Hadd and 17 from Izzy McFadden, while Madie Dayton dropped in 10 points. Alyssa Spagnuolo scored seven points for Marin Catholic (2-30 is scheduled to play Mitty in tournament action Thursday in Mountain View.

• Redwood earned a 4633 road win at Analy on Tuesday night as junior Maya Saibel led the way with 14 points. Kitty White and Anaru Todd scored eight points each for Redwood, which also got seven points from Brooke Denler.

Boys soccer

Thomas Griffin and Ben Sherry had the goals as Redwood held off Tam late for a 2-1 victory on Wednesday. Evan White assisted Sherry on the eventual game winner.

Redwood (2-0-0) scored either side of halftime to get a 2-0 lead before Tam (0-2-0) pulled one back with Nate Wanger scored on an assist from White with about 20 minutes left to play.

“Tam was the better team from then on and probably deserved a second goal,” Redwood coach Will Finnie said.

• Malcolm Zalayet scored a hat trick and assisted on another goal as Marin Academy bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 6-0 win against Dougherty Valley on Wednesday. Dominic Yu added two goals and Diego Felix also found the back of the net for MA (21-0). The Wildcats also got assists from Tristan Schauble, River Jones, and Cameron Yamini.

• Will Beere scored both goals as Branson picked up a 2-0 victory against Urban on Wednesday. Drew Holden assisted the first goal for the Bulls (2-0-2) then Kai Sarker set up the second goal.

Girls soccer

Audrey Spaly netted a trio of assists as Branson stayed perfect following a 4-0 win against Lowell on Wednesday. Spaly found Julia Myerberg for a goal in the 20th minute then sent the Bulls (40-0) into the break with a 2-0 lead after assisting Charlotte Johnson in the 36th minute. Spaly's hat trick of assists was complete in the 54th minute with a pass to RIley Pearson. Ally Hsieh capped the scoring in the 59th minute off a feed from Myerberg.

• Samantha Gerner took a corner kick for Archie Williams that resulted in an own goal by Montgomery as the teams settled for a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night.

Youth football

The Southern Marin Broncos continue their quest for the national Pop Warner Division 1 14-under crown on Thursday in Orlando, Fla. The Broncos defeated the Ft. Lauderdale Falcons, 22-20, in Monday's eight-team first round.
