76ers' Embiid will need procedure to fix lateral meniscus in left knee

-

Joel Embiid can forget about winning a second NBA MVP award.

The 76ers can only hope Embiid can make some sort of recovery and return this season from the procedure he's set to undergo this week to correct an injury to the lateral meniscus in his left knee.

The 76ers did not say on Sunday night how much time Embiid was expected to miss. Philadelphia should have a clear idea on Embiid's recovery timetable after the surgery.

But given the nature of the injury, Embiid should be expected to miss a significant amount of time.

Embiid was named an Eastern Conference starter for the NBA All-Star Game later this month, the seventh time in his career he made the team. The 76ers have a three-game homestand this week that opens Monday against Dallas, only the start of an extended absence for a team that has slumped without him.

Winner of two straight NBA scoring titles, Embiid hurt his left knee Tuesday night in a loss to the Golden State Warriors.

Golf

LIV GOLF LEAGUE >> Joaquin Niemann outlasted Sergio Garcia well after sunset in the season-opening LIV Golf Mayakoba, making a 12-foot birdie putt from the fringe on the fourth hole of a playoff with the green lit by a large video screen.

Niemann won his first LIV Golf title two days after opening with a 12-under 59 — and after having two penalty strokes tacked onto his second-round score Sunday morning for taking incorrect relief on a drop from a cart path on

the 13th hole.

That left the Chilean two shots ahead entering the final round. He closed with a 1-under 70, parring the final two holes to match Garcia (66) at 12-under 201.

Masters champion Jon Rahm, the biggest name to sign with LIV Golf league during the offseason, was tied for the lead until he pulled his tee shot into the hazard on the 17th. He finished bogey-bogey for a 70 and tied for third.

PREMIER

TIGHTENS The Premier League title race just got a lot tighter.

Arsenal benefited from two second-half errors from Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker to claim a 3-1 victory over the league leaders on Sunday.

Arsenal moved up to second place and just two points behind Liverpool after 23 of 38 games in what might shape up to be a

three-way fight for the title.

HOJLUND'S STREAK >> Rasmus Hojlund failed to find the net in his first 14 games in the Premier League for Manchester United. Now he cannot stop scoring.

The Denmark striker marked his 21st birthday by scoring for the fourth straight league game, setting United on its way to a 3-0 win against West Ham at Old Trafford.

PRESSURE ON POCHETTINO >> The pressure is back on Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino after a second straight heavy loss in the league, this time 4-2 at home to Wolverhampton.

It came four days after a 4-1 hammering by Liverpool at Anfield and there were jeers around Stamford Bridge at the final whistle after a wild game, during which Brazil striker Matheus Cunha scored a hat trick for Wolves.

REYNA'S DEBUT >> Gio Reyna made his debut for Nottingham Forest as a second-half

substitute in their 1-1 draw at Bournemouth.

The United States midfielder came on in the 78th minute, four days after signing from Borussia Dortmund on loan until the end of the season.

Skiing

YULE WINS >> Swiss skier Daniel Yule staged an unprecedented comeback to win a men's World Cup slalom, less than four hours after he thought his race was over.

Believing that his errorprone first run wouldn't be enough to qualify for the second leg, Yule started preparing to go home.

But he did qualify as the last racer and was left with 1.93 seconds to make up on leader Clement Noel, and then took advantage of a deteriorating course in spring-like conditions to become the first skier to win a World Cup race from 30th place after the opening run.
