Dominican men snap 3-game skid

Marcus McCutcheon had 17 points and 12 rebounds as the Dominican University men's basketball team used a big second half to beat Azusa Pacific 86-77 on Saturday.

The Penguins (7-14, 4-9 PacWest) only used six players and got balanced scoring led by Brendon Johnson's 18 points. McCutcheon and Nathan Ilunga both scored 17 points while Dale Currie added 16. Garrett Seibels and Carter Plousha both scored nine.

Dominican trailed 37-35 at the break but scored 51

points in the second half to snap a three-game losing streak.

Women's basketball

Dominican got off to a rough start against firstplace Azusa Pacific on Saturday

and never recovered, falling 82-53.

Azusa Pacific (20-3, 140) rolled out to a 22-9 lead after the first quarter then were even more dominant in the second quarter to take a 47-16 lead into halftime.

Jenna Duley led the Penguins (16-5, 9-4) with 13 points while Olgo Faasolo added 11 points.

Prep wrestling

San Marin and Novato both advanced to the North Coast Section Division II Redwood Empire quarterfin­als before tumbling into the consolatio­n bracket on Saturday.

The No. 7 Mustangs took out No. 9 Piner 66-22 in the first round while No. 9 Novato defeated No. 8 Montgomery 36-27. San Marin lost to second-seeded and eventual champion Del Notre 72-11 in the quarters and Novato bowed out to No. 1 Ukiah 60-22.

Novato won one dual in the consolatio­n bracket against No. 5 Napa before being eliminated by No. 3 Windsor.

The wrestling postseason continues with the MCAL Championsh­ips on Saturday at Archie Williams High. The NCS individual championsh­ips are on Feb. 16-17.
