INTERNATIONAL BILLFISH TOURNAMENT OF CLUB NAUTICO DE SAN JUAN December 7-10, Puerto Rico
The 43-foot Cabo Sea Dream won the 64th annual International Billfish Tournament of Club Nautico de San Juan with three blue marlin releases. All three were caught on 20-poundtest line in a special light-tackle edition of the prestigious tournament. The boat was captained by Jesus Vela. Coming in second place was 42-foot Blueprint. The team from Panama Jack, a 50-foot Viking, finished third. In two days, 20 billfish were released, including five blue marlin. The tournament’s original dates were canceled due to Hurricane Maria.
ISLAMORADA SAILFISH TOURNAMENT December 1-3, Islamorada, Florida
The team from Yabba Dabba Doo won the Islamorada Sailfish Tournament with a release in the final minutes. The team’s 14th release came with 15 minutes left and edged secondplace Relentless. The Kalex team — fishing from its substitute boat, Kelly Dawn — finished third, with 12 releases. The fleet released 137 sailfish in three days.
IWFA GUATEMALA BILLFISH TOURNAMENT November 9-11, Guatemala
Serena Wilson was the top angler in the annual International Women’s Fishing Association Guatemala Billfish Tournament. She released 19 sailfish during the two-day tournament, which included 228 sailfish releases. Fran McKelvey released 14 sailfish and one blue marlin for a second-place finish. Connie O’Day took third place, with a total of 15 sailfish releases. Firstplace team honors went to Jill Gaddis, Suzie Villere, Wilson and Donna Krehling. The second-place team was Diane Locke, Aledia Tush, Linda Nolasco and Jing Torn, while Ellen Mathews, McKelvey, Mary Peachin and Kathy Gillen won third place.
