Young Adult Job Fair today at Waldorf West Library

Charles County Public Library will host its first Young Adult Job Fair for ages 16 to 24, supported by numerous Charles County businesses, 3:306:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, at Waldorf West Library in Waldorf.

Local businesses will be able to meet with and interview younger applicants for open positions, internships or apprenticeships at a one-stop hiring event. Representatives from Home Depot, Chickfil-A, Charles County Government, Department of Recreation, Wellburn Corporation, Dav-Co and more will be in attendance. CSM presents 14th annual Jazz Festival

The College of Southern Maryland’s 14th annual Jazz Festival, March 31-April 1, will give area public school jazz bands a chance to sharpen their skills — and area music lovers a chance to tap their toes.

Jazz band students from area high schools will attend clinics all day beginning at 9 a.m., March 31, at the La Plata Campus, Fine Arts (FA) Building. World-renowned jazz saxophonist, composer/ arranger Phil Burlin will rehearse with each band and critique their performances as part of Friday’s clinic. The public is invited to attend this free event.

The festival continues with a jazz concert at 8 p.m. with The Phil Burlin Quartet.

World War I commemoration highlights Mallows Bay

Travel back in time to World War I and experience interactive programs highlighting Mallows Bay at the Discover Quest: World War I Commemoration Weekend from Friday, April 21 to Sunday, April 23. The special event

commemorates the 100th anniversary of the United States entering World War I. Program schedule: Friday, April 21, 6-8 p.m., College of Southern Maryland, 8730 Mitchell Road, La Plata, BI building, Rooms 113 and 114, free admission:

• Art exhibit by Charles County Public School students;

• World War I informational panels; and

• Engaging presentation by underwater archaeologist Don Shomette. Saturday, April 22, 9 a.m.dusk, Mallows Bay Park, 1440 Wilson Landing Road, Nanjemoy, free admission:

• Open house featuring re-enactors, Civil War encampments, archaeological digs, and historical displays. Mattawoman Creek Art Center, 2750 Sweden Point Road, Marbury, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.: • Mixed media World War I art display. Maryland Veterans Museum at Patriot Park, 11000 Crain Highway, Newburg, 11 a.m.- 4 p.m.:

• Display honoring those who fought on the World War I battlefields and those who served in support of them. Dr. Samuel A. Mudd House, 3725 Doctor Samuel Mudd Road, Waldorf, noon- 4 p.m.:

• Guided tour of the famous house, known as the site John Wilkes Booth stopped after he assassinated former President Abraham Lincoln. Tours cost $7 for ages 13 and up, $2 ages 6-12, and free for 5 and under. Tours depart every 30 minutes. McConchie School House and Fairgrounds Farm Museum, 8440 Fairgrounds Road, La Plata, 10 a.m.- 3p.m.:

• Tour of the historic one-room school house and learn about Charles County education during World War I.

CSM alumni focus group event rescheduled

CSM Alumni & Friends Connection Dinner is rescheduled for 6-7 p.m. March 28 at the Prince Frederick Campus, Building B, Room 105 (Multipurpose Room), Prince Frederick. CSM alumni are invited to the CSM Alumni & Friends Connection for dinner and to share insights at a focus group session. Ideas shared will directly impact how CSM alumni are served. Spring Baby Bazaar scheduled April 22

The Department of Recreation, Parks, and Tourism will be hosting the spring Baby Bazaar 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, April 22, at the Somers Community Center, 300 Willow Lane, La Plata. Buy and sell pre-loved baby, toddler and maternity items during the annual baby bazaar. Shop for all things baby and toddler-sized.

Interested in being a seller? Sell baby and toddler-themed items, out-grown toys, clothes, furniture and gently-used maternity items. Setup is from 8 to 9 a.m. Table availability is limited. For details about the baby bazaar or if interested in selling, call Somers Community Center at 301932-6679.

Shred event to feature rain barrel, compost workshops

The Department of Public Works is hosting an environmental outreach event 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, May 13 from in the Charles County Government Building parking lot, 200 Baltimore Street, La Plata. Backyard composting and rain barrel workshops, as well as free document shredding are available. Advance registration for workshops is required.

Charles County Government and the University of Maryland Extension staff are offering one hour workshops for rain barrels and composting. The first rain barrel and compost bin workshops begin at 9:30 a.m. Shred event:

• Free, secure, on-site shredding services available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.;

• Bring up to five boxes per vehicle of personal documents for shredding and recycling;

• Event is for Charles County residents only; and

• Take home a rain barrel and learn proper in-home installation techniques, practical uses for rain barrels, and how to reduce the impact of runoff on local waterways;

Charlotte Hall Veterans Home to host artist reception

In partnership with the Charles County Arts Alliance, Charlotte Hall Veterans Home will present its public art gallery, showcasing 37 artists and 55 works of art 2-4 p.m. Saturday, March 25. The gallery is located along the E-Wing Assisted Living Dining Hallway at 29449 Charlotte Hall Road, Charlotte Hall.

The public is invited to this event and will have a chance to meet the artists while viewing their works on display. Light refreshments will be served.
