So. Md. Community Advocates to host Youth Empowerment Workshop

-

Education has long played an important role in the success of our county and the United States as a whole. From our grade schools that prepare our children to make their posthigh school mark in the world to the land grant universities which spurred much needed innovation in agriculture, our development has long been tied to how we educate future generations.

Though our educational system by and large does a good job conveying the knowledge necessary to transition into adulthood, there are often gaps in terms of teaching our youth how to be best positioned for life success. Community outreach can and should be used to fill that void, and I am thrilled to see that very activity taking shape.

Southern Maryland Community Advocates (SMCA) is hosting its inaugural Youth Empowerment Workshop on April 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Thomas Stone High School, 3785 Leonardtown Road in Waldorf. The event is open to middle and high school students, and participants will get an opportunity to take part in workshops pertinent to personal development, such as getting physically fit the right way, handling cyberbullying, building a resume for college scholarships, professionalism, public speaking, community activism, and much much more. I would encourage you to follow the Facebook page of Southern Maryland Community Advocates at SMCAdvocates. Please like our page so that you are kept informed of updates. Or, send an email to smcadvocates@ outlook.com to receive information on how to register the child(ren) in your life for this event. You can also learn how you can support this event via sponsorship or volunteering. I believe in the saying that “It takes a village to raise a child.”

Let’s collectively work to enhance what our children receive in the classroom. Our children are our future.
