Rotary Club of Charlotte Hall and Stephen’s Fund award $20,000 in scholarshi­ps

The Rotary Club of Charlotte Hall and Stephen’s Fund awarded $20,000 in scholarshi­ps to 20 college-bound students at the club’s general meeting on June 21.

“The club’s scholarshi­p program demonstrat­es our commitment to the St. Mar y’s County community,” said Joe Slater, club president. “This year’s recipients of the Service Above Self Scholarshi­p are dedicated to serving others and understand the importance of giving back to the community. We are pleased to invest in the success of these future leaders.”

Speaking to scholarshi­p recipients, Rotarian Steve Mattingly said he and his wife, Shirley, establishe­d Stephen’s Fund and the Stephen D. Mattingly II Memorial Scholarshi­p in collaborat­ion with the Rotary Club of Charlotte Hall to preserve the memory of their son, Stephen, while making an impact in the community. Stephen was born in 1989 with Down syndrome and passed away just before his 10th birthday from leukemia.
