Drunk driver who killed motorcyclist pleads guilty
Caused March 2016 crash in Hughesville
A White Plains man, who drove drunk and killed a motorcyclist in a March 2016 crash in Hughesville, pleaded guilty on Monday in Charles County Circuit Court.
Arthur Christopher Edelen, 54, pled guilty to homicide by motor vehicle before Judge James West Monday morning, a felony that carries a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment, prosecutors said. He is scheduled to appear before West again on July 18 to be sentenced, responsible for the death of Ernest Young III, 54, of Waldorf.
Edelen’s blood alcohol content was registered at .11 in a test after the accident, over the
.08 legal limit in Maryland, prosecutors said.
Around 9:04 p.m. on March 24, Maryland State Police troopers responded to the crash site at the intersection of Route 5 and Roosevelt Place in Hughesville, according to reports. Preliminary investigation revealed that a Honda Odyssey, operated by Edelen, tried to cross the southbound lanes of Route 5 to enter Roosevelt Place, but failed to yield to oncoming traffic, causing a Honda Gold Wing motorcycle, operated by Young, to collide into the Odyssey’s passenger side. Youth suffered severe injuries and was flown to Prince George’s Hospital Center, where he died two days later.
