Pink October kicks off Saturday
Yuba-Sutter is kicking off National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a run/walk and separate motorcycle ride Saturday as local Pink October activities get underway in Yuba City.
The Annual Race for Awareness 5K race/walk starts at 8 a.m. at Geweke Field, 871 E. Onstott Road, with about 600 participants expected.
Registration is $35 per person.
“The more that we raise the more women we can assist for as many years as we can,” said Nancy Elrod, director of Geweke’s Caring for Women Foundation, which coordinates Pink October events. All money raised helps local women.
Run/walk participants receive a pancake breakfast.
In addition, the public can take part in the “Drive One for Your Community” fundraiser test drive at the Geweke dealership. Ford Motor Co. is donating $20 per participant toward Pink October.
While the 5K is taking place, the Pink October Harley Ride starts with registration from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. at HarleyDavidson of Yuba City, 720 W. Onstott Road. Registration is $25. Participants ride to Colusa Casino for lunch and back again for drawings.
Pink October has expanded its mission over its 19 years from raising funds to help patients with breast cancer to include other female forms of cancer, Elrod said.
The foundation has helped more than 355 local women since 2005, with more than 37 assisted this year.
