Pink Oc­to­ber kicks off Satur­day

Yuba-Sut­ter is kick­ing off Na­tional Breast Can­cer Aware­ness Month with a run/walk and sep­a­rate mo­tor­cy­cle ride Satur­day as lo­cal Pink Oc­to­ber ac­tiv­i­ties get un­der­way in Yuba City.

The An­nual Race for Aware­ness 5K race/walk starts at 8 a.m. at Geweke Field, 871 E. On­stott Road, with about 600 par­tic­i­pants ex­pected.

Reg­is­tra­tion is $35 per per­son.

“The more that we raise the more women we can as­sist for as many years as we can,” said Nancy El­rod, di­rec­tor of Geweke’s Car­ing for Women Foun­da­tion, which co­or­di­nates Pink Oc­to­ber events. All money raised helps lo­cal women.

Run/walk par­tic­i­pants re­ceive a pan­cake break­fast.

In ad­di­tion, the pub­lic can take part in the “Drive One for Your Com­mu­nity” fundraiser test drive at the Geweke deal­er­ship. Ford Mo­tor Co. is do­nat­ing $20 per par­tic­i­pant to­ward Pink Oc­to­ber.

While the 5K is tak­ing place, the Pink Oc­to­ber Har­ley Ride starts with reg­is­tra­tion from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. at Har­leyDavid­son of Yuba City, 720 W. On­stott Road. Reg­is­tra­tion is $25. Par­tic­i­pants ride to Co­lusa Casino for lunch and back again for draw­ings.

Pink Oc­to­ber has ex­panded its mis­sion over its 19 years from rais­ing funds to help pa­tients with breast can­cer to in­clude other fe­male forms of can­cer, El­rod said.

The foun­da­tion has helped more than 355 lo­cal women since 2005, with more than 37 as­sisted this year.

Scram­ble Fore a Cure – Oct. 14, shot­gun start at noon, at Peach Tree Golf and Coun­try Club, 2043 Simp­sonDan­toni Road, Linda. En­try fee: $150 per golfer.

Bowl for Breasts – Oct. 15, start­ing times at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Nu Gen­er­a­tion Lanes, 876 W. On­stott Road, Yuba City. En­try fee: $20 per per­son. Call 755-2600.

Sur­vivor Fash­ion Show – Oct. 24 at 5:30 p.m. at St. Isi­dore Church par­ish hall, 222 S. Clark Ave., Yuba City. Sold out.

The month also in­cludes Women’s Health Screen­ing Day for un­der­in­sured and non­in­sured women Wednes­day start­ing at 9 a.m. at Sut­ter Med­i­cal Foun­da­tion lo­ca­tions: 1590 Poole Blvd. and 969 Plumas St., Yuba City; and 16911 Wil­low Glen Road, Brownsville. The $5 full health exam in­cludes Pap test and clin­i­cal breast exam. Ap­point­ments are needed for the low-cost $40 mam­mo­grams for women age 40 and over.
