Colusa softball improves to 11-0

The Colusa High softball team continued its perfect season by dismantlin­g the competitio­n at its own Randy Watt Invitation­al on Saturday in Colusa.

The RedHawks outscored their two opponents on Friday 27-5 and kept it up again on day two by coasting to three more wins to up their record to 11-0 on the year.

Colusa opened the day with a 10-5 victory over Winters in a six-inning game that was its closest of the day. Ashley Huff, Dyanna Santana and Merissa Almeda picked up three hits apiece to lead the offense, and Hanna Schneider earned the win in the circle.

A seven-run first inning and a six-run second was all it took for RedHawks to cruise to an easy 13-0 win over Trinity in their second game in a contest that was called after three innings of play due to the 10-run rule.

Sidney Lay, Josie Garofalo, Jessica Rico and Huff finished two hits each, and Lay picked up the win in the circle by yielding two hits and striking out four.

Colusa needed only four innings to earn a 13-1 victory over county-rival Pierce in the tournament finale. Lay led the offense by going a perfect 3-for-3, while Garofalo and Santana chipped in with two hits apiece.

Schneider and Addie Taylor combined in the circle for the win for the RedHawks, who will look to improve to 12-0 when they travel to Wheatland on Tuesday. Colfax 11, Pierce 2, 5 inn. In Colusa – The Bears dropped their first game on Saturday before bouncing back to pick up their first win of the season on the final day of the Randy Watt Invitation­al.

Callie Muniz went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Sydney Medina was 2 for 2 in the loss to Colfax, but against Trinity, Pierce saw production from up and down its lineup to win the game easily.

Muniz finished a perfect 3-for3 with three RBIs and Lauren Ornbaun went 3 for 4 and drove in a run to lead the way for the Bears.

Cora Cherry, Emily Ehrke and Halle Charter each went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, and Ariana Paiz went 2 for 3 with one RBI. Ehrke earned the win in the circle, striking out four and allowing four hits in a completega­me effort.

Noemi Martinez drove in the lone run with an RBI double, and Ornbaun and Muniz registered the other two hits in the loss to Colusa for Pierce (1-6).

Yuba City 1, Foothill 1 West Valley 3, Yuba City 0 In Chico – The Honkers faced some quality pitching on the second day of the Pleasant Valley Tournament and closed out the 32-team tourney with a 2-2-1 record.

Yuba City opened the day with a tie against undefeated Foothill in a game in which both pitchers dominated.

Monique Villavicen­cio scored the Honkers’ lone run in the second inning when she reached on an error and scored on another error. The Cougars tied the game in the third when a dropped third strike allowed a runner to reach base and she later scored on a passed ball.

Blake Craft allowed two hits, struck out 13 batters and didn’t issue a walk in the game. She also came through with Yuba City’s lone hit as Foothill’s pitcher recorded 12 strikeouts of her own.

The Honkers came through with only three hits – singles by Craft, Lexi Delozier and Liz Rudstrom – in a loss to West Valley in their tournament finale. Craft allowed five hits and struck out six over 4 ⁄ innings in that game.

“It was a great day for pitching. Both sides were throwing well all day,” said Yuba City coach Trish Lucich. “It was good for us to see that.”

The Honkers (6-2-1) host Marysville on Tuesday.

Sutter 3, Casa Roble 0 Sutter 10, Enterprise 0, 5 inn.

In Chico – After going dropping two games and settling for a tie on Friday, the Huskies closed out the Pleasant Valley Tournament with a 2-2-1 record by posting a pair of shutout victories on Saturday.

Hailey Peterson controlled the action in circle for Sutter, striking out two and throwing a three-hit shutout against Casa Roble and tallying four strikeouts in another three-hit shutout in a mercy-rule win over Enterprise.

Juliana Capaul hit a triple and drove in two runs, and Sam Anderson added a double to lead the offense in the win over Casa Roble.

Akaisha Lewis went 3 for 3 with an RBI, Maddie Anderson drove in two runs and Capaul added an RBI in the blowout win over Enterprise.

The Huskies (7-3-1) will take a week and a half off before hosting Bear River on March 22.

BASEBALL Red Bluff 6, Sutter 3 In Oroville – The Spartans scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and the Huskies couldn’t recover to suffer their first loss of the season in the semifinal game of the Oroville Tournament.

Michael Boomgaarde­n finished 2 for 3 with a tworun homer and Dante Caracciola went 2 for 3 with an RBI single to lead the way for Sutter, which scored all of its runs in the seventh inning.

The Huskies (3-1) continue nonleague play on Tuesday at home against Bear River.

Sutter’s junior varsity team took home the championsh­ip of the JV portion of the Oroville Tournament with a 3-2 victory over Wheatland. Owen Brockman, Sonny McCoskey and Caleb Dollins each smacked a pair of hits in the win.

The Huskies followed that up with a five-inning 10-1 victory over Corning in an extra tournament game. Dollins went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, and Cory McIntyre drove in two runs. McIntyre also struck out four over five innings to notch the win for Sutter (7-1).

TRACK & FIELD River Valley, Marysville compete as sisters meet In Yuba City – River Valley and Marysville competed at the 14-team Falcon-Indian Sisters Invitation­al on Friday at Falcon Stadium.

The meet is called the Sisters Invitation­al for River Valley coach Marie Kroeger and Marysville coach Marcy Tarr, who are sisters and hosted the meet together to showcase track and field talent in the northern part of the Sac-Joaquin Section and around Northern California.

Leading the way for River Valley’s varsity girls team was Cornelia Richardson, who took first in the 100 hurdles (17.49 seconds) and second in the 300 hurdles (53.01).

Sarah Holland was third in both the 400 (64.63) and the 3,200 (12:28.48), Raquel Ballardo took third in the 800 (2:46.27) and Abigail Titus placed fourth in the discus (84 feel, 4 inches).

Sydney Shrader won the pole vault (7-0) and Baylee Plumb finished third in the long jump (15-8) for Marysville.

The Indians had a slew of top finishers in varsity boys competitio­n and were led by David Kerstan, who took first in the 1,600 (4:47.50) and second in the 800 (2:05.41), and Parker Jenks, who took first in the discus (146-11).

Taking second for Marysville were Noah Childers in the 110 hurdles (17.38), Mikah Bernal in the triple jump (39-9) and Eugene Barajas in the 300 hurdles (46.50).

Pierce Desmond finished third in the 800 (2:08.16) and fourth in the 1,600 (4:58.91), Gary Walker placed third in the 100 (11.64), Gavin Battista was third in the pole vault (10-6) and Devin Edwards took fourth in the triple jump (37-4) to round out the leaders for the Indians.

Dylan de la Vega finished second in the long jump (19-9) and third in the triple jump (39-1), Jack Farley placed third in the shot put (40-5) and Shayan Raisi was fourth in the 800 (2:09.02) for the Falcons

In frosh-soph boys competitio­n, River Valley’s John Kroeger was the top performer by taking first in three events – the triple jump (42-4), the long jump (19-5) and the 400 (55.10).

Dante Montgomery finished first in the high jump (5-4) and third in the triple jump (38-1), David Kyambadde took second in the 100 (12.28), Osvaldo Munoz was second in the 3,200 (11:30.48), Edson Leon placed third in the 300 hurdles (49.93) and Josiah McMenamy posted a thirdplace finish in the pole vault (7-6) for the Falcons.

For Marysville’s froshsoph boys team, John Garrison placed first in the 110 hurdles (19.14), Tim Spence won the discus (116-5), Joey Henry took second in the 1,600 (5:05.38) and Daniel Burdick was third in the 110 hurdles (19.68).

Madeline Morrison took second in the 100 hurdles (18.03) and Grecia Rodriguez was third in the 300 hurdles (54.22) for River Valley’s frosh-soph girls team, while Marysville’s Star Miller finished third in both the 100 hurdles (18.80) and the long jump (13-11 ⁄

SWIMMING Honkers fall to Tigers In Yuba City – Yuba City’s girls and boys swim teams both came up short in a Tri-County Conference meet against Inderkum on Friday afternoon at Gauche Aquatic Park.

The Tigers won the girls competitio­n, 105-68, despite a strong showing by Honker freshman Jessica Silviera, who took first in both of her individual events by winning the 500yard freestyle (6:42.47) and 100 backstroke (1:19.12).

Silviera also was also part of the first-place 400 freestyle relay team with Claire Oakes, Maren Hammerstro­m and Calista Martin, which timed in at 5:07.37.

Alexandrea Petersen scored 153.55 to take first in the diving competitio­n.

The Honkers’ boys team fell to Inderkum by a score of 105-67. John Rogers was the only competitor to win an event for Yuba City by taking first in the diving competitio­n with a score of 114.5. COLLEGE SOFTBALL Lassen 5, Yuba 3 Lassen 12, Yuba 1, 5 inn. In Linda – The 49ers played one final doublehead­er tune-up before beginning Bay Valley Conference play this week, but are still searching for that elusive first victory after getting swept by the Cougars.

Yuba recorded eight hits and battled until the end in the opener before coming up two runs short in what was its closest loss of the year. Anjelica Cisneros and Emily Hicks both went 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Stephanie Benton added an RBI single in the loss.

The second game didn’t go as well as the first, as the 49ers were limited to four hits in a game that was shortened to five innings. Benton delivered an RBI single to account for Yuba’s lone run in that game.

The 49ers (0-11) open BVC play on Tuesday at home with a doublehead­er against Mendocino.
