Craft’s homer lifts Yuba City past Marysville

Sophomore standout Blake Craft belted a two-run home run over the fence in leftcenter field with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Yuba City High softball team to a thrilling 4-2 walkoff victory over Marysville on Tuesday afternoon in Yuba City.

Craft and Lexi Delozier both finished with two hits and two RBIs to account for all of the Honkers’ hits and runs in the game. Craft also earned the win in the circle by allowing two hits, walking three and striking out 11 in a complete-game effort.

The Honkers’ defense also did its part, and coach Trish Lucich said catcher Maiquel Castro had a strong game behind the plate for Yuba City (7-2-1), which hosts Lindhurst on Friday.

Josie Rapp singled and came in to score on a two-run knock by Leah Maldonado in the fifth inning to provide the offense for the Indians.

Rapp also turned in a strong outing in the circle, allowing only the four hits and striking out five in a complete-game effort of her own.

It was the second walk-off loss in as many days for Marysville, which suffered an 11-10 defeat at Wheatland on Monday. The Indians (5-5) will look to bounce back on Thursday when they travel to Dixon for their Golden Empire League opener.

Colusa 8, Wheatland 0 In Wheatland – Ashley Huff and Dyanna Santana both went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs to power the RedHawks to a nonleague victory over the Pirates.

Sidney Lay chipped in with two more hits, including a double, and she also went the distance in the circle while tossing a three-hit shutout to keep the RedHawks unbeaten on the year.

Colusa (12-0) will take six days off before hosting Oroville on March 21.

Wheatland (8-4-1) hosts East Nicolaus on Thursday.

The Pirates won the junior varsity game, 16-15. Kelly Phillips went 4 for 5, Sarina Gutierrez was 3 for 3 and Aleyah Chun pitched the final three innings to record the win for Wheatland (8-0).

BASEBALL Colusa 17, Wheatland 13, 8 inn. In Wheatland – Tied at 13-13 at the end of the seventh, the RedHawks erupted for four runs in the top of the eighth to earn an extra-inning win over the Pirates.

Both teams ended the day with 12 hits, but Wheatland made six errors defensivel­y and walked 13 batters in the game.

Christian Lyss led the way for Colusa by finishing 3 for 5 with a double and four RBIs, while Justin Davies went 2 for 5 with three RBIs. Alec Bailey added a 2-for-5 showing with a double and an RBI, and Zach Dillard knocked in two runs.

The RedHawks (5-1) will next play in the Willows/Orland Axe Tournament starting on Thursday.

Wheatland’s Connor Olsen finished 3 for 4 with a double and smashed a grand slam in bottom of seventh to tie the game and send it into extra innings. He finished with six RBIs.

Austin Furr went 3 for 4 with a double, triple and scored twice, and Braden Skaggs and Wyatt Stokes added two hits apiece for the Pirates (0-5-1), who host East Nicolaus on Thursday.

Sutter 8, Bear River 3 In Sutter – Dante Caracciola went 2 for 3 at the plate and threw five strong innings on the hill to power the Huskies to a nonleague victory over the Bruins.

Caracciola struck out five batters and surrendere­d only one earned run on three hits to notch the win.

Kyle Boomgaarde­n drove in two runs, Justin Cryer added two hits and Eric Mitchell had an RBI to help the cause offensivel­y for Sutter (4-1), which hosts Lincoln on Friday.

In the junior varsity game, Alex Bryan drove in a run and earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief to lead the Huskies to a 7-3 victory over Bear River.

Cory McIntyre knocked in two runs and Gavin Sheffield added an RBI to help the offense for Sutter (8-1).

CO-ED TENNIS Marysville 9, Mesa Verde 0 In Citrus Heights – The Indians improved to 2-1 in GEL play with an easy victory over the Mavericks.

Nick Yang (6-0, 6-0) and Yupenn Lor (6-1, 6-0) both cruised to wins in boys singles, while Anna Rice (6-1, 6-2) and Pang Yang (6-2, 6-3) posted victories in girls singles.

The girls doubles teams of Amanda Yang and Letecia Staples (6-1, 6-1), and Angelie Xiong and Andrea Vang (6-3, 6-0) won their matches handily, and the mixed doubles tandem of Soloman Thao and Angelica Yang swept their match, 6-0, 6-0. Mesa Verde forfeited both boys doubles matches.

Marysville continues GEL competitio­n on Thursday at Dixon.

Lindhurst 7, West Campus 2 In Olivehurst – The Blazers swept all five doubles matches and remained perfect in GEL play with a victory over the Warriors.

Katheng Her and Joshua Usvat (7-5, 6-2), and Kevin Hang and Kong Yang (7-5, 7-5) won their boys doubles matches, while Mimi Her and Angelina Yang (6-1, 6-1), and Kristin Vang and Kathy Vang (7-6[2], 6-1) picked up wins in girls doubles.

Nancy Zuniga and Triston Miller teamed up for a 6-1, 4-6, 10-5 victory in mixed doubles, and Harlin Kaur (6-0, 6-1) and Abigail Yang (6-0, 6-3) won their girls singles matches.

Lindhurst (5-1, 4-0 GEL) will take a week off before hosting Mesa Verde on March 21.

BOYS TENNIS Live Oak 9, Mercy 0 In Live Oak – The Lions picked up three victories by way of forfeit and barely had to break a sweat in the six contested matches en route to a Sacramento Valley League victory over the Warriors.

Winning singles matches for Live Oak were Christian Eller (6-4, 7-5), John Breining (6-0, 6-0), David Topete (6-0, 6-0) and David Fregoso (6-0, 6-0).

In doubles action, the Lions received a pair of 8-3 wins from the teams of Gurman Singh and Ian Hunter, and Manny Ramirez and Harris Khan.

Live Oak (4-0, 2-0) continues league play on Thursday at home against Willows.

Sutter 6, Las Plumas 3 In Oroville – Kyle DeRee, Justin Navarrot and Ben Heuvelhors­t each won singles matches to help the Huskies earn an Butte View League win over the Thunderbir­ds.

DeRee won his match, 6-3, 6-0, Navarrot earned a 7-6, 6-3 win, and Heuvelhors­t won his match, 6-0, 6-1.

DeRee also teamed up with Spencer Leff for a 9-7 win in doubles, while the teams of Kulson Noraas and Eric Huffman, and Navarrot and Heuvelhors­t won their doubles matches by scores of 8-2.

Sutter (3-2, 3-1) will play Corning in a league match on Thursday at the Yuba City Racquet Club.

BOYS GOLF Yuba City 247, Woodland 263 In Linda – The Honkers opened their Tri-County Conference slate with a victory over the Wolves at Peach Tree Golf & Country Club.

Christian Pineda shot a 43 and Thomas Allen carded a 44 to post the low scores for the Honkers. Matt Uzelac added a 51, Jacob Jeffrey shot a 53 and Joseph Bailey posted a 56 to round out the leaders for Yuba City.

TRACK & FIELD YC competes at sisters meet In Yuba City – Yuba City joined 13 other schools at the Falcon-Indian Sisters Invitation­al on Friday at Falcon Stadium.

Kaiden Henry won the varsity boys shot put with a throw if 52 feet, 2 ⁄ inches and he also placed fourth in the discus with a mark of 113-8.

Keith Halsey was second in the 400 (52.01 seconds) and fourth in the 200 (23.64), and KeRon Blackwell took second in the high jump (5-10) for the Honkers.

In the varsity girls division, sophomore Citlali Fernandez took third in the discus (85-10) and was fourth in the shot put (31-2) to lead the way for Yuba City’s throwers.

Emma Nelson placed second in the 200 (28.82) and took fourth in the 400 (65.77), and she also teamed up with Yasmeen Lopez, Hannah Owens and Alexah Owens for a third-place finish in the 4x400 relay. Their time was 4 minutes, 34.65 seconds.

The Honkers’ 4x400 relay team of Tilian Vrazel, Isayah Osborne, Diego Early and Mike Palmquist finished first in frosh-soph boys competitio­n with a time of 3:50.46. The same team also placed second in the 4x100 relay in 46.74.

Vrazel took second individual­ly in the 200 (26.01) to complete the top finishers for the Honkers.

SHOOTING Team Coon Creek opens season In Rio Oso – Local shooters from Team Coon Creek competed against 330 athletes from 17 high school and gun clubs throughout Northern California in their first California Youth Shooting Sports Associatio­n series trap tournament of the season on Saturday at the Coon Creek Trap and Skeet Club.

Leading the local shooters were four competitor­s from Yuba City. In the varsity division, Jace Garza shot a score of 99 out of 100 that placed him in an eight-way shoot-off for first place. He fell out of contention after the firstround of the shoot-off with a score of 23 out of 25.

Thomas Casillas placed second in the rookie division, Jayson Shaver took second in the intermedia­te junior varsity division and Ethan Whiteaker placed third in the rookie division to round out the top local performers at the meet.

JV SOFTBALL Sutter 18, Natomas 0, 5 inn. In Sutter – Reagan Ford struck out six to earn the win and added a 2-for-2 day at the plate to lift the Huskies to a mercy-rule victory over the Nighthawks.

Kat Simms went 3 for 4, and Paige Thompson went 2 for 2 to help the cause for Sutter (7-1).

FROSH BASEBALL Yuba City 10, El Camino 0, 6 inn. In Sacramento – Chance Diemer stuck out 11 while throwing a one-hit shutout to propel the Honkers to a road win over the Eagles.

Diemer got ahead in the count against all 22 batters he faced in the game, and helped his own cause at the plate by hitting a triple and driving in three runs.

Luke Afato doubled, tripled and finished with two RBIs, and Nick Hernandez added a 2-for-2 showing at the dish for Yuba City (4-3).
