Lindhurst softball opens GEL play with win

Danika Martin allowed three hits and stuck out three in a complete-game effort, and the Lindhurst High softball team opened its Golden Empire League slate with a 6-1 victory over Capital Christian on Thursday afternoon in Sacramento.

Hailee Sutton went 2 for 4 with a run scored, Tiana Ponce doubled and Gracie Villalobos knocked in a run and scored another to lead the offensive attack for Lindhurst.

The Blazers (4-7, 1-0 GEL) will travel to Trowbridge to face East Nicolaus in a nonleague game on Monday before returning to league play on Tuesday at home against Dixon.

Rio Linda 7, River Valley 1 In Yuba City – The Falcons mustered only three hits in a loss to the Knights in their TriCounty Conference opener.

Kaylee-Mae Williams singled, stole two bases and scored on an error, Holly Brennan singled and stole a base, and Emily Smoot added a single to account for River Valley’s three hits.

The Falcons (3-6, 0-1) are slated to host Woodland today in a make-up game, weather permitting.

Wheatland 9, Winters 0 In Winters – Taylor Garcia struck out five while tossing a five-hit shutout and received plenty of run support as the Pirates blew past the Warriors in a final nonleague tune-up.

Molly DeQuine went 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs, and Ryleigh Webb added a 4-for-5 showing with three RBIs to lead the 16-hit outburst by Wheatland.

Garcia helped her own cause by recording two hits with a double at the plate, and Marlee Carpenter finished 2 for 3 for the Pirates (5-5-1), who begin league play with a Butte View League/Westside League crossover game at Corning on Tuesday.

Sutter 5, Colusa 0 In Colusa – Hailey Peterson stuck out five while firing a twohit shutout and the Huskies picked up a nonleague victory over RedHawks to hand Colusa its first loss of the season.

Darcy Gillen went 3 for 3 with a home run and a double, Katie Anderson finished 2 for 2, and Akaisha Lewis and Phoebe Topete smacked a double each to provide the offense for Sutter (8-3-1), which begins league play on Tuesday with a crossover game against Las Plumas in Oroville.

Sidney Lay and Josie Garofalo had the only two hits for the RedHawks.

In the junior varsity game, Hailey Schamanski went 3 for 4 with a triple and five RBIs to lead the Huskies to a 13-2 win. Emma McConville went 2 for 4 with an RBI, Brooke Mayo added two hits and Reagan Ford stuck out four to earn the win for the Sutter (8-1).

Colusa 11, Oroville 5 In Colusa – In their second game of the day, the RedHawks spotted the Tigers three early runs before rallying with five runs in bottom the third to take the lead for good.

Lexi Ramos delivered the big blow with a two-run homer as part of her three-RBI day, and Jessica Rico finished 2 for 2 and knocked in two runs.

Lay picked up the win in the circle and helped her own cause at the plate by going 2 for 4 with an RBI, Helena Harris tripled and Ashley Huff chipped in with an RBI double for Colusa, (13-1), which begins Sacramento Valley League play on Tuesday at Willows.

Faith Christian 12 In Yuba City – The Crusaders put up plenty of offense to earn the Sacramento Metropolit­an Athletic League victory over the Lions.

Hailey Hruska blasted two home runs to deliver five RBIs on her 3-for-5 day. Haley Rogers excelled both at the plate and in the circle, delivering two triples, two RBIs and striking out six en route to picking up the win.

Courtney Hruksa added a double and two RBIs for New Life (2-1, 2-0).

Isabella Malan hit a home run to lead off the game for Faith Christian (1-4, 1-2).

BASEBALL Gridley 5, University Prep 4

Gridley 7, West Valley 4 In Anderson – The Bulldogs opened the American Christian Tournament strong by posting a pair of wins on the first day of tourney play.

Gridley scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn the win over University Prep in the opener, capped off by a walk-off sacrifice fly by Frank Leyva.

Wyatt Swinney went 2 for 3 with an RBI, Jarred Kopp was 2 for 4 with a double and scored a run, and Ty Cota earned the win on the mound.

Cota followed that up by going 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored in the win over West Valley. Braden Shipman finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs and scored once, and Lance Santerre allowed no earned runs over four solid innings to record the win.

Gridley (5-5-1) is slated to continue tournament play today, weather permitting. Colusa 11, Durham 2, 4 inn.

Lassen 8, Colusa 2 In Anderson – The RedHawks began play at the American Christian Tournament by splitting their two games.

In the win over Durham, Colusa drubbed its Division III rival behind the hitting of Christian Lyss and Alec Bailey, both of whom homered and doubled while accounting for five runs.

Blake Steidlmaye­r knocked in two more while finishing 2 for 3, and Justin Davies struck out five and allowed five hits while going all four innings on the mound to earn the win.

Lyss launched another home run and ended 2 for 3 against Lassen, but the Grizzlies proved to be too much. Lucas Davison and Davies picked up two hits a piece and Raymond Frias added an RBI double.

Colusa (9-3) is scheduled to play again in Anderson today.

Palisade 9, Sutter 7 In Phoenix – The Huskies opened the Pride Classic in Arizona with a loss to Palisade High of Grand Junction, Colo.

Dante Caracciola went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, and Jack Enos was 2 for 4 with a tworun triple to lead Sutter’s offense. Zachary McDaniel belted a solo home run and Erik Mitchell finished 2 for 3 with an RBI.

The Huskies (4-3), who attended the San Francisco Giants’ spring training game against the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night, will play two tournament games today.

Winters 3, Wheatland 0 In Winters – Lucas Carpenter pitched a gem, but the Pirates didn’t record a hit to back him up in a nonleague loss to the Warriors.

Carpenter stuck out six and only allowed two hits, but one of them was a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning that proved to be the difference.

Wheatland (1-6-1) begins league play on Tuesday at Corning.

BOYS TENNIS Inderkum 5, River Valley 4 In Natomas – The Falcons suffered their first loss of the season after dropping a nailbiting final match decided by a tiebreaker.

Winners in singles plays for River Valley were Luvdeep Bal by scores of 6-2, 6-3 and Mustafa Zizai, 6-1, 7-6.

Doubles action saw tight play, with Noah Towne and Anthony Flores winning 1-6, 7-5 (10-4). Ethan Thiara and Zane Millang also won in a tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-3 (10-6).

Still in strong position in the TCC, River Valley (12-1, 4-1) next heads to West Sacramento to take on River City on Monday.

Sutter 5, Oroville 4 In Oroville – Kyle DeRee and Ben Heuvelhors­t won their singles matches, and the Huskies swept all three matches in doubles to earn a hard-fought win over the Tigers.

DeRee earned a 6-1, 6-3 win and Heuvelhors­t cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory before the duo teamed up for an 8-6 win in doubles. Kulson Noraas and Johannas Wiehe joined forces for a 9-7 doubles win, and Justin Navarrot and Eric Huffman won their doubles match, 8-4, to give Sutter the victory.

The Huskies (6-2) host Wheatland on Tuesday in a Butte View League match.

CO-ED TENNIS Lindhurst 5, Capital Christian 4 In Sacramento – The Blazers remained unbeaten in GEL play with a narrow victory over the Cougars on the road.

Tony Xiong won his boys singles match, 7-5, 7-6 (5), and Abigail Yang won her girls singles match, 6-0, 6-0.

The girls doubles teams of Mimi Her and Angelina Yang, and Kristin Vang and Kathy Vang both rolled to 6-0, 6-0 wins, and the mixed doubles team of Triston Miller and Nancy Zuniga earned a 6-1, 6-3 win to give Lindhurst the victory.

The Blazers (6-1, 5-0) continue GEL play on Tuesday at home against Dixon.
