Seeking inspiration for a variety of home projects, people flocked to the annual Home, Garden and Recreation Show in Yuba City.

The Yuba-Sutter Fairgrounds was packed with exhibitors sharing their products and services with some of the estimated 14,000 people who will attend the three-day event.

Event organizer Andrew Coolidge said,

despite the wet weather, people are eager to see the offerings at the annual show.

“People realize that if they want to buy something, they have to go to three to four different places in the community and take notes and photos,” said Coolidge. “With the show, they can go to one place, get pictures, ask questions and shop on site – that’s what were trying to do.”

He said having several businesses in the same industry close at hand is a benefit to the consumer and business.

“Hot tub season is approaching, so a lot of people are out here looking because they can compare prices with four different dealers,” Coolidge said. “Same with mattresses – we have three companies selling mattresses.”

Coolidge said motorcycles, ATVs and BBQ islands are getting a lot of attention at the show.

“The weather stopped some people on Friday, but we still got about 1,000 people,” Coolidge said. “They’re all turning out today and I think we’re going to hit higher than our normal 4,000.”

Jon and Lisa Cannon recently took over Casey’s Pest Control in Dobbins and used the show as a way to connect with customers.

“It’s our first year taking over the business from mom and dad, and we’re getting our name out here being a local, family-owned business,” Lisa Cannon said. “It’s a great turnout here and we’re just getting started.”

They took over for Mike and Leanne Casey and Jon, a former truck driver, said staying local for work is better for family life.

“I used to drive a truck, and with this line of work, I get to take the kids hunting and to Little League,” Jon Cannon said.

In the middle of a home improvement project, Darrel Walker and Mary Rosenberg of Olivehurst looked over the plethora of items at the show.

“The people who are painting our house, Diamond Star Painting, are here so we’re supporting them and we’re looking at all the other stuff too,” Walker said. “We always pick up some ideas every time we come here – you can see everything for your house, yard and other artistic things.”

Walker and Rosenberg were looking at some handmade wooden frame mirrors in one of the halls at the fairgrounds.

“We’re redoing our bathroom, painting and will be getting a new kitchen floor,” Rosenberg said.

Cheryl Giyer of Meridian was looking over plants, shrubs and flowers at the Bald Mountain Nursery and visiting her son who is in the same industry.

“I’m here to visit my son, who owns TLC Landscaping, and see all the other things here,” Giyer said. “It’s just an idea day.”

Marysville resident Mike Hackett picked up some yard art for his home.

“I got this horny toad, and hopefully it’ll scare away my peacock,” Hackett said. “I come here every year and find great things like jewelry for my wife.”

Drew Robertson, 14, transformed an old mailbox and some metal parts into art for the recycled art project competition at the show.

“It’s an old mailbox my parents use to have and I did all the work but my grandfather helped me hold some of the pieces together,” Robertson said.

Rick and Marcia Ricardy are thinking about some home projects and used the show to get some ideas, prices and more.

“We scheduled some people to come over and give us an estimate today,” said Rick Ricardy. “I like to see and talk to people and get a feel for the person who will be doing the work because I’ve got to trust who is coming over to my house to do work.”
