Nov. 2, 2016, in Marysville: Taj Fields, 43, was shot multiple times in the doorway of Hit Squad Boxing Center, which he owned. Roman Zarate is charged with murder. The case is in limbo, though, as Zarate was declared incompetent to stand trial. He was ordered for treatment at a state hospital. detectives and prosecutors who worked on the case believe we know the circumstances of his killing from those confidential sources, but right now we have no available evidence we can present in court. In that sense, the case has gone ‘cold.’”

If the circumstances change, the investigation will again become active and criminal charges could again be filed, he said.

Dec. 7 in Marysville: Gloria Booth, 92, was found dead in her home in the 400 block of East 25th Street with a gunshot wound. Initially, police thought she died of natural causes in her kitchen. They returned to the scene and began an investigation when the Yuba County coroner discovered a bullet wound.

The department has yet to release where on her body she was shot.

“We’re still actively following up leads and reviewing evidence,” Sachs said Thursday. “There’s a lot of information and a lot of investigation that goes into these cases.”

He said the department, as other local agencies do, rely on crime scene and evidence processing done by the Department of Justice, which can slow the investigation.

Booth’s family last year offered a $50,000 reward for information about her death.
