Locals named to Northern Section all-league teams

The Northern Section released its allleague teams for boys and girls soccer last week, and a host of Mid-Valley athletes were honored for their strong performanc­es on the pitch this winter.

In all, there were five league MVPs along with 42 players who took home allleague honors.

Here’s a breakdown of the locals who received postseason accolades:

BUTTE VIEW LEAGUE Sutter High’s girls team wrapped up the BVL title with an undefeated 7-0-3 record before falling to eventual champion Yreka in the Northern Section Division II semifinals.

The Huskies finished the year 15-3-3 overall, and leading the way was senior Courtney Spain and junior Julia Tarke, both of whom took home BVL Most Valuable Player honors.

Spain finished with 11 goals and a teamhigh 11 assists to be voted as the league’s Offensive MVP, while Tarke scored a team-high 16 goals and handed out six assists and was named the league’s Defensive MVP for a Huskies team that finished the year with 14 shutouts.

Also named to the All-BVL squad for Sutter were Julia Damboriena, Megan Matte- oli, Laci Landis and Savannah Poland.

Vanessa Garcia, Vanessa Silva, Janellie Colmenares and Allie Lichtenber­ger were named to the all-league team for Wheatland, and Monica Mojica, Brianna Chacon and Julissa Espinoza were AllBVL for Gridley.

On the boys side, Gridley finished second to Orland in the BVL standings and fell short of winning its third straight Northern Section Division II title with a loss to Lassen in the first round of the playoffs.

The top player for the Bulldogs was junior Agustin Cardenas, who was named the league’s co-Offensive MVP after tying for the team lead with 19 goals to go with eight assists.

Also making the All-BVL team for Gridley were Enrique Martinez, Roberto Zarae, Ruben Rodarte and Juan Duran.

Making the all-league team for Sutter were Santos Martinez, Jonathon Adams, Scott Thomas and Jose Gonzalez, while Nathaniel Meredith and Juan Rangel were selected for Wheatland.

SACRAMENTO VALLEY LEAGUE Though Colusa’s boys team finished last in the SVL, it didn’t stop senior Sal Lara from taking home Offensive MVP honors. Lara started the year at goalkeeper before

moving to forward because of injuries, and finished the year with four goals and three assists while earning the respect of the league’s coaches.

Also making the All-SVL team for the RedHawks was Gumer Salazar.

All-league selections for Live Oak were Cesar Hernandez, Omar Alcantar and Jose Bermudez, and making the All-SVL squad for Pierce were Gerardo Alvarado, Ezequiel Castaneda, David Carabez and Angel Vega.

Local girls making the all-league team in the SVL were Live Oak’s Shantal Alvarez and Alejandra Palacios, Colusa’s Amber Morales, and Pierce’s Renata Montanez, Giselle Vera and Fabiola Hernandez.

MID-VALLEY LEAGUE Williams’ girls team ran roughshod over the MVL with a perfect 6-0 record, outscored its opponents a staggering 41-1 during league play and fell just short of winning the Northern Section Division III title with a shootout loss to University Prep in the championsh­ip match.

The Yellowjack­ets finished the year 14-2 overall, and the catalyst was junior Liz Hernandez, who was voted as the league’s MVP after scoring a team-high 23 goals and handing out five assists.

Williams’ Kristi Hill was also voted by her peers as the MVL’s Coach of the Year.

Also earning spots on the all-league team for the Yel- lowjackets were Flor Cruz, Adamari Zamudio, Ceci Orduno and Dania Aceves.

On the boys side, Jesus Herrera, Juan Aceves and Anthony Rodriguez received all-league honors for the ’Jackets.
