Growing marijuana outdoors still illegal

In both Sutter and Yuba counties, as well as Yuba City and Marysville jursidictions, outdoor cultivation of marijuana is banned. Marijuana can only be grown inside a detached structure that meets all building code requirements, like a garage or pre-fabricated greenhouse. In Sutter County, the greenhouse can be no larger than 80 square feet.
In Yuba City, the detached structure may be no larger than 75 square feet, and the grower/resident must have a prescription, said Development Services Director Arnoldo Rodriguez.
In Sutter County, cultivation is not permitted within 1,000 feet of a school, school evacuation site, church, park, county-licensed child care center, or youth-oriented facility. Yuba County does not have that requirement.
Jeremy Strang, Yuba County code enforcement manager, said since outdoor cultivation is banned, the distance from a school should not be an issue.
“If nothing is occuring outdoors ... it lessens the impact on a school,” Strang said Thursday. “As long as people follow the law, I think the schools won’t experience any issues.”
In Yuba County, up to six plants are allowed to be grown indoors, so long as the space is secure.
