Sutter’s DeRee claims another BVL title

Sutter High’s Kyle DeRee is the king of the Butte View League once again.

Competing in the title match of the BVL Championsh­ips for the fourth straight year, DeRee took home his second consecutiv­e singles crown and won his third straight doubles title during the final round of competitio­n at Gridley High on Wednesday afternoon.

In singles play, DeRee beat teammate Ben Heuvelhors­t, 6-2, 6-2, in the semifinals before picking up a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Orland’s top player to take home the individual title for the second time.

DeRee also teamed up with Heuvelhors­t to win the doubles championsh­ip, picking up a 5-7, 6-4, 6-0 semifinal win over a team from Orland and beating another Orland duo 6-4, 6-4 in the finals.

With their performanc­es, DeRee and Heuvelhors­t both advance to the Northern Section Championsh­ips on May 6 at Las Plumas High in Oroville.

The duo and the rest of the Huskies will begin their playoff push today when they play Live Oak in the Northern Section Division II quarterfin­als at the Yuba City Racquet Club.

Lindhurst 5, West Campus 4 In Sacramento – The Blazers clinched their fourth straight Golden Empire League title with a narrow victory over the Warriors on the road.

Tony Xiong picked up a 0-6, 7-5, 6-1 win in boys singles, and Abigail Yang and Harlin Kaur both swept to wins in girls singles by scores of 6-4, 6-1, and 6-2, 6-2, respective­ly.

The boys doubles team of Yansey Lee and Joshua Usvat earned a 6-3, 6-0 victory, and the mixed doubles tandem of Triston Miller and Nancy Zuniga won their match by a score of 6-2, 6-3.

Lindhurst (10-1, 9-0 GEL) continues league play today at Mesa Verde.

BASEBALL Marysville 10, Lindhurst 0, 5 inn. In Marysville – Gary Cooper struck out 10 while tossing a onehit shutout, and the Indians cruised past the rival Blazers for a GEL victory at Weldon Field.

Seth Echevarria went 2 for 3 with three RBI, and Cooper helped himself out at the plate by hitting an RBI double and scoring two runs. Taryn Dolan was 2 for 3 with a double, Job Stout hit an RBI double and Matthew Chiono singled and scored twice.

Marysville (13-4, 9-3) hosts West Campus in a make-up game today before traveling to play Lindhurst on Friday.

Brian Oliver’s second-inning single was the lone hit for the Blazers (3-8, 3-8). Yuba City 10, River City 0, 6 inn. In West Sacramento – Brad Madison finished 2 for 4 with three RBI and Hayden Reyna went 2 for 3 with a home run and scored three times to power the first-place Honkers to a TriCounty Conference win over the Raiders.

Blake Baca added two hits and knocked in a pair of runs, and Anthony Piegaro struck out five and allowed four hits over five shutout innings to record the win.

Yuba City (11-7, 7-2) will host River City in a doublehead­er on Friday before traveling to play Rio Linda for a make-up game on Saturday.

River Valley 6, Pioneer 3 In Woodland – The Falcons (10-8, 6-3) took advantage of a Pioneer pitching change and rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to earn a come-from-behind victory over the Patriots in a battle for second place in the TCC.

Austin Engelhardt was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI and also pitched the bottom of the seventh to get the save. Nick Ali, who came on in relief of starter Clayton Chipchase after 3 ⁄ innings, was the winning pitcher. Garret Bugarin finished 1 for 3 with two RBI. The teams meet again at River Valley on Friday.

River Valley’s junior varsity took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning, only to lose 5-4 on a walk-off suicide squeeze in the bottom of the eighth.

The Falcons (7-11, 5-4) totaled five singles, one each from Fernando Vasquez, Josh Lee, Justin Rodriguez, Elias DeArte and Alex Solano. Handling the pitching duties were Jalen Dulai (four innings, five strikeouts, four hits) and Aaron Minnix (3 ⁄ innings, three strikeouts, two hits).

Winters 2, Sutter 1 In Sutter – Dante Caracciola struck out five in a completega­me effort on the hill and knocked in the Huskies’ lone run at the plate in a hard-luck nonleague loss to the Warriors at Arata Field.

Michael Boomgaarde­n doubled and scored the run for Sutter (12-7), which will host Wheatland today in a return to Butte View League play.

In the junior varsity game, Sutter (11-4) won 7-4 thanks to a threeRBI, 2-for-4 day from Chad Hopkins and 1-for-3 efforts from Austin Jones, Caleb Dollins and Steve Sanchez. Jones scored twice, Dollins and Sanchez once each.

SOFTBALL Sutter 9, Wheatland 2 In Wheatland – Juliana Capaul went 3 for 4 with a home run, two doubles and two RBI, and Hailey Peterson turned in another strong showing in the circle to lead the Huskies to a BVL victory over the Pirates.

Akaisha Lewis also finished 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI, Sam Anderson was 2 for 3 with a double, and Phoebe Topete and Katie Anderson added a double each to help the cause for Sutter.

Peterson struck out three and allowed three hits and one earned to earn the win for the Huskies (13-3-1, 5-0), who will compete at the two-day Arroyo Grande Tournament starting Friday.

In the junior varsity game, Emma McConville was a perfect 4-for-4 with a triple and five RBI to power Sutter to a 13-10 victory. Hailey Schamanski added two hits to go with a double, and Reagan Ford knocked in two runs and was the winning pitcher for the Huskies (17-4, 4-1). COLLEGE BASEBALL Yuba 9, Contra Costa 5 In San Pablo – It was a true team effort by the 49ers, who used nine pitchers and 17 position players to edge the Comets and sweep the three-game Bay Valley Conference series.

Darrel Doll hit a double and scored twice for Yuba, which mustered only four hits in the game but took advantage of 18 walks and hit batsmen issued by Contra Costa pitchers. The 49ers erased a 5-3 deficit by scoring six runs in the eighth inning to take the lead for good.

Up next for Yuba (10-22, 5-10) is a home game against Napa Valley today at 2:30 p.m. at Gary Engelken Field.
