Marysville softball wins easy, claims first place in GEL

Hannah Clavelle finished 3 for 4 with a double and four RBI, and Raina Hudson went 3 for 4 with two RBI of her own to power Marysville High’s softball team to a 14-1 Golden Empire League victory over Natomas on Thursday at Abby Field in Marysville.

Emily Stobaugh finished 2 for 3 and drove in three runs, and Josie Rapp was 2 for 3 with an RBI double for the Indians, who pounded out 17 hits in only four innings of work offensivel­y. Rapp also earned the win in the circle by allowing two hits and striking out seven.

Leah Maldonado added two hits and an RBI, and Madison Powell chipped in with a pair of hits as well.

The Indians (12-6, 6-1 GEL) continued league play on Tuesday at West Campus.

Mesa Verde 3, Lindhurst 0 In Citrus Heights – The Blazers suffered their first GEL loss of the season to a Mavericks team which only had one previous league win entering the day.

Lexi Steele was 3 for 4 with a double for Lindhurst and Arika Elliott was 2 for 4 with a double. The Blazers (7-11, 4-1) host Capital Christian Tuesday.

Yuba City 4, Rio Linda 3 In Yuba City – Corrine Belser’s two-run single in the bottom of the seventh capped a two-out, three-run, game-winning rally for the Honkers in a Tri-County Conference win over the Knights.

The winning rally began with Yuba City down 3-1 and after its eighth and ninth hitters in the order made outs. Lexi Delozier (4 for 4, double), Taylor Birkholz and Blake Craft (2 for 4) all singled; the latter scored Delozier, and Birkholz and Craft moved to third and second base, respective­ly, on the throw home. Belser followed with her only hit of the game, which brought home the winning runs.

Craft also pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and striking out 10.

The game was played at River Valley High as Yuba City’s field was too wet to

be playable. The Honkers (14-3-1, 6-1) hope to be on their own field today when they face Inderkum in a makeup game at 4:15 p.m.

Yuba City won the junior varsity game 342 in five innings behind a four-hit performanc­e from Isabel Gonzalez. Alyssa Richebache­r went 3 for 5 with a double and a triple, Nelli Barbosa had a pair of hits and Keerah Abella struck out six while tossing a one-hitter for the Honkers (15-4, 6-1).

BASEBALL Marysville 4, West Campus 1 In Marysville – Taryn Dolan followed up Gary Cooper’s one-hitter on Wednesday by striking out 11 and allowing only five hits to pitch the Indians to a GEL win over the Warriors at Weldon Field.

Marysville scored all of its runs in the second inning when Hunter Nakamura hit a two-run single and was followed by a two-RBI double off the bat of Diego Gonzalez.

Chase Tarr added a 2-for-3 showing and a double for the Indians (14-4, 10-3), who travel to face Lindhurst today.

Sutter 11, Wheatland 1, 5 inn. In Sutter – Zachary McDaniel had six strikeouts, didn’t allow an earned run and was also 2 for 3 at the plate to lead the Huskies to a Butte View League win over the Pirates.

Jack Enos was 2 for 2 with a double and three RBI, Erik Mitchell had a triple and scored twice and Jack O’Neal and Michael Boomgaarde­n had an RBI each. Sutter (13-7, 3-1) travels to Wheatland (1-15-1, 0-5) for a rematch today.

The Pirates won the junior varsity game 10-8 to move to 5-0 in BVL play. Austin Jones went 2 for 3 with a three-run homer, and Hunter Hudson tripled and drove in two runs for the Huskies (11-5, 2-1).

No stats from either game were provided by Wheatland.

East Nicolaus 9, Durham 7 In Durham – Caleb Born knocked in four runs and was 3 for 5 for the Spartans in a Mid-Valley League win over the Trojans.

Tyler Jensen was 2 for 5 with an RBI, S.J. Brown tripled, Max Henderson doubled and Adin Starr had an RBI. The Spartans (8-8, 3-2) stay on the road at Williams on Wednesday.

BOYS TENNIS Live Oak 5, Sutter 4 In Yuba City – Live Oak claimed the opening-round Northern Section Division II playoff dual match at the Yuba City Racquet Club when its No. 2 doubles team of Haripaul Bhullar and John Breining won, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.

The Lions (10-2) also claimed No. 3 doubles when the team of Christian Eller-David Topete won, 6-4, 6-4. Their singles wins were by Edgar Topete (6-3, 6-2), Eller (6-0, 6-2) and David Topete (6-7, 6-2, 6-1).

Sutter also had three singles wins from Kyle DeRee (6-2, 6-0), Ben Heuvelhors­t (6-1, 46, 6-1) and Johannes Wiehe (6-4, 6-1). The Huskies’ doubles win was by a 6-1, 7-5 margin thanks to the tandem of DeRee and Heuvelhors­t.

“The Sutter gentlemen played well. It was a great match,” Lions coach Larry Dolan said.

Live Oak plays in the section semifinals Tuesday at Orland at 2 p.m.

Inderkum 5, River Valley 4 In Yuba City – The Falcons (16-4, 8-4) finish third in the TCC after the loss. River Valley wins came in singles from Luvdeep Bal (6-2, 6-4), who is 20-0 on the year, Sameer Gupta (62, 4-6, 10-5), Thomas Tonthat (6-3, 2-6, 10-7) and Mustafa Zazai (6-1, 6-3).

CO-ED TENNIS Marysville 9, Natomas 0 In Marysville – The Indians moved a step closer to earning a spot in the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs after sweeping the Nighthawks in a GEL match.

Nick Vang (6-1, 6-3) and Yuppen Lor (6-1, 60) won boys singles matches, and Anna Rice (6-3, 7-6) and Pang Yang (6-1, 6-2) won their girls singles matches.

In doubles play, the Indians received victories from the teams of Alex Keth-Solomon Thao (6-1, 6-3), Lue Thao-Bovic Leutero (6-1, 46, 10-6), Leticia Staples-Amanda Yang (6-2, 64) and Andrea Vang-Angelie Xiong (6-2, 6-4).

Josiah Vang and Angelica Yang also joined forces for a 6-4, 6-2 win in mixed doubles to round out the winners for Marysville.

The Indians (9-3, 8-3) wrap up the regular season today at West Campus with a shot at clinching a playoff berth.

Lindhurst 7, Mesa Verde 0 In Citrus Heights – The GEL-champion Blazers kept their perfect league record intact with a sweep of the Mavericks.

Winning singles matches were Joshua Usvat (6-0, 6-0) and Triston Miller (6-0, 6-0) on the boys side, and Abigail Yang (6-1, 6-1) and Harlin Kaur (6-1, 6-1) in girls.

Lindhurst also received doubles wins from the teams of Andrew Vang-Vichai Yang (6-3, 6-0), Nancy Zuniga-Mimi Her (6-0, 6-0) and Kathy Vang-Aylin Zaragoza (6-1, 6-0). Mesa Verde forfeited the No. 2 boys doubles and the mixed doubles matches.

The Blazers (11-1, 10-0) close out the regular season today at home against Capital Christian.

BOYS GOLF River Valley 209, Rio Linda 330 In Sacramento – Both Trey Davis and Riley Bell shot under par for nine holes on the Teal Bend Golf Course. Davis had a 3-under 33, Bell a 34. Cole Norton shot 37 and Andrew Davidson 41 for the Falcons, now 17-1 overall, 15-0 in the TCC.

COLLEGE BASEBALL Napa Valley 11, Yuba 3 In Linda – Darrel Doll struck out 10 over 5 ⁄ innings of work, but the 49ers made six errors behind him in a tough Bay Valley Confernce loss to the Storm at Gary Engelken Field.

Doll allowed seven hits and only one of the six runs he allowed was earned.

Tanner Seibel and Eddy Cruz finished with three hits each, Joe Ramos hit a two-run homer and Taylor Doyle added an RBI single to lead the way offensivel­y for Yuba.

The 49ers (10-23, 5-11) travel to Napa today for game two of the three-game series.
