Girls on the Run hosting 5K Fun Run this Saturday
Lace up those shoes and get ready to run for a good cause.
Girls on the Run of Yuba-Sutter is holding a community 5K Fun Run this Saturday as a fundraiser for the club.
“The run helps raise funds which provide scholarships for lowerincome families,” said Amber Darrach, director of Girls on the Run of Yuba-Sutter. “About 65 percent of our program participants utilize financial aid.”
Darrach said the local organization started with 17 girls in 2008; there were 135 participants last year.
“My daughter participates in the programs, and I’m one of the coaches,” Darrach said. “This season, we had 23 coaches, and most of the other coaches are educators and administrators who volunteer their time to help with the program.”
A pancake breakfast, hosted by the Yuba City Police Officers Association, will be part of the event and Rosie’s snow cones will be available at the end of the race – both as a separate purchase.
Last season’s 5K event had more than 150 participants. Darrach said this year’s has more than 200 people signed up and includes a shirt and souvenir “Running Buddy” bib.
Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based, positive youth development program that uses fun running games and dynamic discussions to teach life skills to girls in third to eighth grade.
During the 10-week Girls on the Run program, girls participate in lessons that foster confidence, build peer connections and encourage community service while they prepare for an endof-season celebratory 5K event.
Sessions are led by trained volunteer coaches who guide and mentor the girls through the program.
Girls on the Run has served more than 1.2 million girls since its inception in 1996. The local chapter was established by the Soroptimist Club of Marysville-Yuba City. Accounts Receivable.........
