Jenks leads Indians track and field to GEL title

Marysville High’s varsity boys track and field team wrapped up an outright league title by taking first at the Golden Empire League Championsh­ips on Wednesday at Yuba College in Linda.

The Indians won the seven-school meet with a team score of 139.5 to finish well ahead of Dixon’s secondplac­e total of 111.5.

Leading the way for Marysville once again was senior thrower Parker Jenks, who took first in both the shot put (55 feet, 2 ⁄ inches) and the discus (145-8).

While all of the meet’s times were slower due to a 6-10 mph headwind on the homestretc­h, Mikah Bernal still managed to turn in a strong performanc­e by taking first in the 400 (52.08 seconds), third in the 200 (23.71) and third in the triple jump (42-3).

David Kerstan placed second in both the 1,600 (4 minutes, 44.99 seconds) and the 800 (2:07.71), Tim Spence was second in the discus (1387) and third in the shot put (42-1), Cornell Greenwood finished second in the 110 high hurdles (17.78) and Ivan Gale was second in the pole vault (102).

Taking third for the Indians were Colt Jahnsen in the discus (119-5), Eugene Barajas in the 300 intermedia­te hurdles (46.79) and Ethan Maycroft in the pole vault (9-6).

Marysville’s 4x100 relay team of Bryce Handy-Gray, Greenwood, Noah Childers and Gary Walker also placed third in a time of 45.39 to round out the leaders for the Indian boys.

The top three finishers in each event for varsity boys and girls qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV-V Meet, which will be held on May 16 and 18 at Cal State Stanislaus in Turlock. Winners of

Wednesday’s meet were named All-GEL and will receive a patch for their accomplish­ments.

Marysville’s varsity girls squad finished fourth behind Dixon, Capital Christian and West Campus. The only allleague performer for the Indians was Katrina Lane, who won the pole vault with a mark of 7-6.

Taking third for Marysville were Destiny McBride in the 100 hurdles (19.30), Victoria Escheman in the pole vault (7-0) and Baylee Plumb in the long jump (14-8). Plumb also ran on the third-place 4x100 relay team with Jameicka Parker, Escheman and Leslie Velazquez, which clocked in at 54.33.

Leading the way for the Indians’ frosh-soph boys team was John Garrison, who finished first in both the 110 hurdles (18.47) and 300 hurdles (47.51), second in the high jump (5-2) and third in the triple jump (34-11).

Joey Henry placed first in the 1,600 (5:04.27) and third in the 800 (2:20.63), and Anthony Meyer took first in the 3,200 (11:59.23).

Daniel Burdick was second in the 110 hurdles (18.63) and third in the 300 hurdles (49.21), James Phillips was second in the 400 (58.05), Javier Zuniga finished third in the 100 (13.19) and Eric Jansenn placed third in the discus (82-1) to complete the top performers for the Indians.

BOYS TENNIS DeRee, Kalisuch 3rd in section In Oroville – Sutter senior Kyle DeRee and Colusa senior Will Kalisuch both went 3-1 to finish in a tie for third place at the Northern Section Championsh­ips at Las Plumas High on Monday.

DeRee opened the tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Chico’s No. 4 player and followed that up with a 6-1, 6-2 win over the No. 1 player from Yreka. He then posted a 4-6, 6-1, 6-6 (7-5) victory over Chico’s No. 1 to advance to the final four, where his run came to an end with a loss to the No. 2 player from Pleasant Valley in the semifinals.

Seeded No. 5 at the start of the tournament, Kalisuch had a tough draw in his first-round match against Orland’s No. 2, but came away with a hard-fought 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-1 victory.

Kalisuch later posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Shasta’s No. 4 player and earned a spot on the all-section team for advancing to the third round. He then beat Shasta’s top player, 0-6, 7-6 (3), 7-5, to come away with another victory.

That win propelled Kalisuch to the semifinals, where he lost 6-3, 6-0 to the eventual champion and top-seeded player from Pleasant Valley.

DeRee also teamed up with fellow senior Ben Heuvelhors­t to take third in the section in doubles. The Sutter duo picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over a team from Shasta and a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Colusa’s top duo of Kalisuch and Trent Giffin. DeRee and Heuvelhors­t then lost in the semifinals to the No. 1 team from Pleasant Valley.

DeRee is a two-time singles and three-time doubles Butte View League champion, while Kalisuch was the Sacramento Valley League’s singles and doubles champ.

SOFTBALL Colusa 8, Orland 2 In Orland – Sidney Lay went 3 for 4 with two RBI at the plate and took a no-hitter into the sixth inning in the circle to power the RedHawks to a nonleague victory over the Trojans in their regular-season finale.

Lay struck out eight and allowed four hits to earn the win, and Josie Garofalo finished a perfect 4-for-4 as Colusa broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning.

The Sacramento Valley League champion RedHawks finished the regular season 28-4 overall and will find out their playoff seed when the Northern Section brackets are released on Saturday.
