Marysville will advance straight to Friday’s championsh­ip round. Should the Indians lose Wednesdy, they will play an eliminatio­n game at 7:15 p.m. to move on to the title game.

BASEBALL Capital Christian 5, Marysville 3 In Stockton – The Indians trailed 5-1 entering the seventh inning and brought the tying run to the plate, but could not complete the comeback in Game 1 of their best-of-three SJS Div. V semifinal series against the rival Cougars.

Jase Weckman went 2 for 3 with a triple and Diego Gonzalez was 2 for 3 with double to lead the way at the plate for Marysville (22-7), which finished the game with five hits. Hunter Nakamura added a double and Chase Tarr drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.

With their season on the line, the sixth-seeded Indians will return to Billy Hebert Field on Tuesday to conclude the series. Game 2 is set for 4 p.m., and should Marysville win, it would move to a deciding third game 30 minutes later.

Capital Christian (23-5) is the four-time defending section champion and the No. 2 seed. Oakdale 11, Yuba City 1, 5 inn. In Sacramento – The Honkers (20-9) never got going, while the Mustangs never slowed, scoring five runs in both the third and fifth innings in Game 1 of their best-ofthree, SJS Div. III semifinal series.

Game 2 is Wednesday at 4 p.m. at McAuliffe Ballpark near Sacra- mento State. Game 3, if necessary, will follow 30 minutes after the end of the first game.

Yuba City starting pitcher Jake Harvey struck out three, walked four, surrendere­d eight hits and for earned runs in 3 ⁄ innings. Sean O’Leary and Izic Pino handled mop-up mound duty.

Honkers coach Dave Rodriguez said pitcher Anthony Piegaro, who defeated Vista del Lago in a playoff opener Thursday, will start Game 2.

Yuba City scored it’s only run in the bottom of the fifth. Earlier the Honkers had two good scoring opportunit­ies, but Thomas Stevens’ hot grounder with the bases loaded and Anthony Hernandez’ similar shot with two on were both turned into outs.

“We didn’t play well and we absolutely got no breaks,” Rodriguez said. “Usually when that happens it’s a sign of disaster.”

TRACK & FIELD Two Honkers moving on to Masters

In Fair Oaks – Yuba City seniors Kaiden Henry and KeRon Blackwell advanced to next week’s SacJoaquin Section Masters Meet after placing in the top seven at the Sac-Division II-III Meet on Wednesday and Friday at Bella Vista High.

Henry placed first overall in the shot put with a throw of 53 feet, 9 inches to punch his ticket, and Blackwell cleared 6-0 in the high jump to place fifth and punch his.

The Masters Meet will be held next Thursday and Friday at Elk Grove High.
