- By Leticia Gutierrez lgutierrez@appealdemocrat.com

Selected wine, dinner, live music and moonlight surprises are celebrating the Empire Mine’s legacy of “gold, grit and glory” June 9 at the historic site in Grass Valley.

The state historic park’s first “Mine, Wine and Dine” event is from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. at 10791 E. Empire St. Tickets are $95 each.

Requests for a special event to honor the area’s legacy have been received over the years, said Empire Mine Park Association event chair Steve Sanchez in a statement.

The evening includes award- WHAT: WHEN: WHERE: winning wines, hors d’oeuvres and a farm-to-table dinner, plus music performed by The George Souza Band and singer/guitarist Heather MacAdam.

Dinner starts at 7 p.m., followed by moonlight walks through the park’s Old Clubhouse and Empire Cottage and dancing starting at 8 p.m. Guests are invited to wear summer-evening casual attire.

Sanchez expects living history docents in costume to also attend and share secrets about the mine’s heyday in the early 1900s. The mine was one of Northern California’s oldest, largest and most prosperous hard-rock gold mines.

Money raised by the association goes to support the historic park in ways the state does not, Sanchez said. About 100,000 people visit the park and community each year.

Tickets may be purchased at the Empire Mine Visitor center gift shop or by calling 273-8522.
