KIDS: ‘Focused on camaraderie’

-

McKenney had its second annual Color Run on Wednesday. Principal Shevaun Mathews said 227 students and some teachers took part.

“This is all about team building, and it’s part of our Positive Behavior Intervention program, which is designed to reinforce positive behavior,” Mathews said.

She said discipline is down 20 percent at the school, and the event was organized, in part, by the associated student body and the yearbook committee.

Students, paced out in groups of about 20 at a time, ran 1 mile through several stations where people would toss colorful scoops of powder over them as they rev- eled in the rainbow of colors.

“It was the coolest thing because I got to make another memory,” said Haden Burns, 11. “I did this same thing last year when I was at Cordua School, and it was very fun.”

Cheyenne Xiong, 11, said it was fun to get color all over herself and her classmates.

Yearbook adviser Tina Selken helped organize the event aimed at creating fun – keeping students connected is the real value.

“This is a way to get kids focused on camaraderie – we’re all family here and we have fun,” Selken said.
