SOFTBALL: East Nic’s Price, Maxwell’s Miller MVPs

SACRAMENTO VALLEY LEAGUE Colusa cruised to the SVL title undefeated and then exacted some revenge with an eightinnin­g 1-0 victory over East Nicolaus to win the Division V title.

Junior pitcher Sidney Lay tossed a shutout in the championsh­ip game and was named the league’s MVP for the second straight year after leading the RedHawks back to the top as they finished the year with a 30-4 overall record.

Lay posted team highs at the plate with a .546 batting average and 51 RBI to go with four home runs, 22 doubles and 42 runs scored. In the circle, she went 213 with a 1.00 ERA, striking out 87 and walking just four over 133 innings pitched.

She was joined on the All-SVL squad by a host of teammates in senior infielder Lexi Ramos, junior infielders Josie Garofalo and Helena Harris, junior catcher Ashley Huff and sophomore utility player Dyanna Santana.

Junior infielder Lauren Ornbaun and freshman pitcher Emily Ehrke earned spots on the all-league team for Pierce, and senior Megan Widener was the lone selection for Live Oak.

Colusa’s Jamie Lay was also named the SVL’s Coach of the Year.

MID-VALLEY LEAGUE East Nicolaus cruised through an undefeated MVL campaign and came a run short of repeating as section champions with the loss to Colusa in the title game.

The Spartans finished the year 26-6 overall, and leading the way was a new face in freshman Savannah Price, who was named the league’s MVP for her work at the plate.

Price batted .486 and posted team highs with 49 RBI, five home runs, 11 triples and 17 doubles for a 1.000 slugging percentage. She also finished second on the team with 44 runs scored.

Named to the All-MVL team for East Nicolaus were senior Boston Jones, sophomore Savhanna Angland and freshman Riley Grigsby. The Spartans’ Neil Stinson was also voted the league’s Coach of the Year.

Williams senior Carolina Medina was the lone all-league performer for the Yellowjack­ets.

MOUNTAIN VALLEY LEAGUE Maxwell shared the MTVL title with Quincy and pulled off two upset wins in the playoffs before suffering an eight-inning 10-9 loss to Fall River in the Division VI championsh­ip game.

Leading the way for the Pan- thers was senior shortstop Madison Miller, who was voted by the coaches as the league’s co-MVP.

Miller batted a monster .672 with a home run, four doubles and a team-high 43 runs scored. She posted an on-base percentage of .741, a slugging percentage of 1.517 and drove in 12 runs.

Earning spots on the AllMTVL team for Maxwell were senior infielders Mallory Mathis and Maureen LaGrande, senior outfielder­s Megan Dunlap and Sarah Munk, and junior outfielder Tiffany Jenkins.

Biggs was represente­d on the all-league team by junior infielder Ciera Pyle, sophomore infielder Megan Collins and freshman outfielder Emma Hudson.

Quincy’s Megan Cahill was voted the league’s co-MVP along with Miller, and Quincy’s Mike Yalung was the Coach of the Year.
