Yuba City Unified spending $2.2M on high school upgrades

claim last year and received $300,000. The money was used to address other roofing problems at schools throughout the district, totaling about $750,000, he said.

“We’re having to do a little more work on them than what is normally done, and I think that is primarily because of the recession,” Shemwell said.

The variation between the seasons have also stressed the roofs, he said. The 2016-17 school year saw summer temperatures up to 100 degrees and record-breaking rainfall in the winter and spring.

“It’s a step to mitigate what we believe will be another stormy winter coming next year,” he said.

The multi-purpose room and gymnasium will be recoated during the roofing process to add another 15 years of warranty to the existing infrastructure, he said.

The district plans to be reroofing schools for the foreseeable future now that funding has returned, he said.

Track and field: Yuba City High School will see a new track and football field by next fall.

The district routinely tests the field to ensure athlete safety. After the past year, the turf does not meet standards set by YCUSD, Shemwell said.

“At Yuba City High School, the wear has been a little faster there because it’s a much more heavily used recreational area,” Shemwell said. “A lot of people in the area use it as a park and walking area.”

He said if the turf and field are not upgraded, visiting coaches and officials could rule the infrastructure unsafe and prevent a home game. The upgrade of an additional layer of padding on the turf field will reduce wear and tear and make it safer for student athletes, he said.

“We have to look out for human life safety related issues and a sports field is no different,” Shemwell said.

After the next school year, River Valley High School will see improvements to the track and field due to similar concerns, he said. The RVHS track and field are not as degraded currently as YCHS, he said.
