Healy powers A’s past Nationals
Cueto, Giants lose to Phillies
OAKLAND (AP) – Ryon Healy had two doubles and two homers, Jed Lowrie doubled twice and homered, and the Oakland Athletics beat the Washington Nationals 10-4 on Saturday.
A day after being outscored by 10 runs, the A’s got off to a fast start as Healy and Lowrie each hit two-run home runs in the bottom of the first inning off starter Joe Ross (2-2).
Healy hit a long solo shot off reliever Jacob Turner in a three-run seventh inning in which the A’s broke open a 7-4 game. Healy’s 11th home run of the year landed in a luxury box about 40 feet above the 400-foot sign in center field.
It was Healy’s first career multi-home run game and the four extrabase hits tied a franchise record accomplished by 16 others since 1913.
Yonder Alonso hit a tworun home run – his 16th – off Turner earlier in the seventh.
Oakland’s 10 runs were a season high and the four homers tied a season best.
Daniel Murphy was 3 for 4 with a double for the Nationals, improving to 7 for 9 in the series and 13 for 22 over his last five games since missing three games last weekend with an illness. Adam Lind hit a three-run home run off A’s starter Daniel Mengden in the third.
Liam Hendriks (2-0) pitched 1⁄ scoreless innings after replacing Mengden with two outs in the fifth. Daniel Coulombe, Ryan Madsen and John Axford finished up.
Phillies 5, Giants 3 PHILADELPHIA – Ben Lively pitched seven strong innings in his major league debut, Odubel Herrera drove in three runs in Philadelphia’s four-run seventh and the Phillies held on for a victory over San Francisco.
Tommy Joseph homered for the Phillies, who snapped a five-game losing streak while winning for just the seventh time in their last 33 games. Philadelphia avoided losing its 11th straight series, which hasn’t happened since the 1941 club did it.
The Phillies will go for their first series win since April 27 in the three-game finale today.
Lively (1-0) became the first Phillies starter to earn a victory since Jeremy Hellickson on April 27 by allowing one run and four hits with three walks and no strikeouts.
But the win didn’t come easy.
Brandon Crawford’s oneout single in the ninth off Hector Neris brought San Francisco within 5-2, and manager Pete Mackanin lifted Neris after pinch-hitter Aaron Hill singled home Crawford with two outs to make it 5-3. With runners on first and third, Jeanmar Gomez got pinch-hitter Nick Hundley to ground out to earn his second save.
Johnny Cueto (5-5) allowed three runs and eight hits while striking out nine and walking none. He dropped to 1-5 in 12 career starts against the Phillies while continuing his road woes. The veteran righthander has a 5.02 ERA on the road this season and a 3.55 mark at home.
The Phillies will go for their first series win since April 27 in the finale today.
