Colusa County Fair opens today
There’s a lot going on at this year’s Colusa County Fair. The gates open on the event today with a ceremony at 4:45 p.m.
There is all of the usual county fair fare with an extensive schedule of exhibits, judging, entertainment and more. But what this year’s fair really earns purple ribbons for is the musical entertainment.
Music will fill the air all through this year’s fair, with performances from more than 10 acts. Some of the performers are groups, others solo, but they all have one thing in common – they each bring their own unique flavor.
The fair will feature performances from artists with a loyal fan base, like the Dave Russell Band – considered to be one of Northern California’s most requested bands, according to fairgrounds manager Jonathan Howard. The lead singer is also a regional artist and calls Placer Coun- ty home.
Another fairly prominent singer that will grace the stage at the monster truck derby is Roberto Tapia, best known for winning a television singing competition in Mexico. To make things even more interesting, Tapia will perform on top of monster trucks on Saturday night.
“The artist is Roberto Tapia; he’s been on the ‘American Idol’ of Mexico and is pretty popular,” Howard said. “Following him will be the U.S. Air Force Band of the Golden West. We added cool entertainment that people actually want to see.”
But the fair will also offer an array of performances that are more off the beaten path. Among them are a beat boxing cellist and an electric violinist. Joey Chang, the cellist, goes by Cello Joe; using his instrument and beat boxing abilities, he’s able to produce sounds that range from musical styles like dubstep, folk, rock, classical and hip-hop.
“I like to book entertainment that’s fun and different,” Howard said.
Another interesting act is the duo Razzvio, who sing and play electric versions
of the violin and drums. The lead singer and violinist, Razz, plays on a customized instrument that allows her to sing and play the violin at the same time. She and her partner, Kevin Proctor, create their own pop and rock arrangements.
“We made it so it’s more about the entertainment and music this year,” Howard said. “We also added more shade structures so people have places to relax and enjoy it all.”
