CREWS: Needed manpower
meet the public safety criteria.
“It’s an opportunity to mitigate fire risk and allows inmates to give back to the community in a meaningful and productive way,” Durfor said. “I strongly support partnerships with special districts, like the North Yuba Water District.”
Durfor said in previous years, inmates have worked with the Linda Fire Protection District for weed abatement.
“Inmates have picked up trash on the side of county roadways, worked on the grounds at the Yuba County Library and have maintained the sheriff’s shooting range at the Yuba County Airport.”
In a press release, Durfor said the program is a partnership between the Sheriff’s Department, Yuba County Fire Department and organizations like North Yuba. Crews provide a costeffective labor source for budgetstrapped districts like NYWD.
“It’s a win-win,” Durfor said. “Work programs allow our inmates to make a positive difference in our community, while giving the inmates job skills and a sense of self-worth and dignity that comes from a productive day’s work.”
North Yuba provides irrigation water to more than 100 parcels in Dobbins and Oregon House and domestic water service to approximately 2,500 residents in Brownsville, Forbestown, Rackerby and Challenge.
Crews were out at one of the three Dobbins Oregon House Ditches, which makes up 22 miles. The Upper Forbestown Ditch is about 10 miles.
