Stand Down seeking help with veterans

- By Chris Kaufman ckaufman@appealdemocrat.com

The Yuba-Sutter Stand Down needs help to help veterans.

The annual event happens in August. Susan Downing said increasing costs are making it difficult to serve the more than 1,000 veterans and their family members who come to Beckwourth Riverfront Park seeking services, goods and camaraderie.

“We’re starting to plan and the biggest thing we’re running into is the dental service costs will be higher than in the past,” Downing said. “We’ve committed to having one dental van but in the past we’ve had three vans.”

She’s looking for dentists and hygienists to offer their services or for cash donations to help get more dental vans to accommodate the need.

“We want to be able to provide those services to as many veterans as possible and dental care seems to be one of the things that everyone needs,” Downing ADDRESS: PHONE: WEBSITE: said. “Unless they have a 100 percent VA disability rating, they won’t get dental care through the VA.”

And then there’s hearing. Downing said Veterans Affairs has a hearing van that will accommodate those in need of a check up or service, but even that comes at a cost.

Then there’s vision care.

“Vision is the other medical thing that people use at the Stand Down,” Downing said. “We’re blessed to have Dr. Bradley from Yuba City, who comes and volunteers his time and staff.”

She said the VA brings in medical staff for routine check ups and agencies from both counties provide services for blood pressure tests, immunizations and more.

“We’re up to 1,000 people. We want to continue to provide the services for the three days for the veterans and their family members,” Downing said. “We have about 700 volunteers and providers but we’re always looking for more people to help at the event.”
