Girls encouraged to attend free camp at CORE, take on STEM challenges
A free camp, aimed at engaging girls in science, technology, engineering and math-related fields, is scheduled for June 26-30 in Marysville.
Focused on motivating junior high girls, the Girls in Robotics Leadership Camp, which is part of the UC Davis C-STEM Center, will be at CORE Charter School.
Kristina O’Brien, a math teacher at the Aerospace STEM Academy, is the camp mentor and said organizers will work to engage girls interested in the field and retain girls already involved.
“Its ultimate goal is to give junior high age girls a chance to learn some leadership skills, meet other girls and work on coding and robotics,” O’Brien said. “It’s a way to keep them interested in STEM areas, because at that age we tend to loose girls in those areas.”
She said the camp will have two college students, who have been virtually trained via the C-STEM program, to help as assistant mentors. Two high school students who will serve as assistant coaches.
“If your daughter shows an interest in math or science, this is the perfect opportunity to keep encouraging with the camp,” O’Brien said. “They don’t have to know much about math or science or be good at either to participate in the camp.”
The curriculum will cover programming in C, leadership skills, teamwork, building confidence, and women in information technology.
The camp is sponsored by the Aerospace STEM Academy.
