More community news, please, and more about Beale, agricutulture, and keep up the arts reporting

Here’s the last of three parts about an online survey we conducted concerning what readers feel were the most important topics and issues for us to cover.

We asked for suggestions on issues that should be covered and how they should be covered ... and we got plenty of response. By topic:

Marysville/Linda/Olivehurst: Respondents most often mentioned they’d like coverage of communities other than Marysville, and several asked for more coverage of Plumas Lake. Crime was one of the most-often listed concerns, as well as traffic through Marysville ... ugh. Other comments:

The ugly run down state of everything in the main drag through town.

Marysville has much more charm than Yuba City, no contest. It is made for walking tours. One suggestion is a pedestrian bridge over congested 9th St from Ellis Lake to D or C St.

Olivehurst is cleaning up nicely. ... I am also tired of Plumas Lake thinking their neighborhood is more important than anyone under the 95961 zip code.

These two cities (Yuba City and Marysville) are inextricably connected, even though they won’t admit it. What happens in both matters to us all.

History focus like the Bok Kai Museum in Marysville, again business focuses for locally owned interview some of the older residents for some more think pieces to share from yesteryear.

Why Marysville stays stagnant as towns and cities around it find ways to prosper.

Military: Everyone wants to know about efforts to keep the base open. And they also want more stories bout local airmen and how locals can support the military. Other stuff:

To be notified of significant changes regarding Beale AFB is important. I would like to know more about Beale’s wild areas, the wetlands, the former German POW barracks, and the relationship with Spenceville Wildlife Area directly to the east.

How Beale contributes to economy.

In that Beale AFB is part of the community, of course military issues are important. All military personnel both active, reserve and retired are important and attention should be given to them.

Beale is a huge source of talent and revenue for this community; we need to keep people aware of its benefits.

Not so interested now, but if things go south with Korea, I would probably want to know how and who it is affecting the local community.

Beale AFB, and we have an armory for our National Guard locally. We should be hearing more about things we can do to better support these military members ...

Agriculture: A lot of commenters simply stated that we need to recognize that agriculture is the cornerstone of our economy. Other remarks:

More talk with local farmers, more info on processing facilities such as Sunsweet, and more information about crops grown here.

More stories featuring large and small operators in agriculture and their contributions to our communities including dollars spent in the community, jobs generated, crops grown here, history and value of ag to our local communities

... I would like to know more about the farms and ranches around me, the crops and their cycles, what it takes to own and run an agricultural establishment. Newcomers need to know these things, and longtime locals won’t mind being reminded. ...

The loss of farmland to housing developments.

Arts and Entertainment: An often-mentioned thought was that more entertainment for children is a concern. Other comments:

The A-D has excellent coverage of the local arts and culture scene. More photos of locals, particularly young people, engaged in the arts would be sweet.

Local shows, concerts, events, etc. Need better coverage as to what movies are playing in Yuba City.

Being a nonprofessional musician, the arts are very important to me. The various mediums allow people to express not only themselves, but what society is going through at the moment. It helps express what society’s emotional level is and it also provides an outlet for those gifted with talent.

... Please continue features and get with your local schools drama/art teachers to do profiles on who is bringing these teachings to our kids.

Why can’t we have concerts like Grass Valley/Nevada City?
