Yuba City falls in Portland for fifth straight defeat

- Appeal-Democrat

A strong pitching effort from Sam Leach wasn’t enough to get the Marysville Gold Sox a victory Monday night.

Leach gave up just two runs in seven innings, but that was enough to send the Gold Sox to a 2-1 defeat against the Medford Rogues at Colusa Casino Stadium.

The first game of a three-game series resulted in the first loss for Marysville (6-12) since last Wednesday, before it swept three games from the Yuba City Bears last weekend to crawl out of the Great West League cellar and into fifth place.

Game 2 against the Rogues is tonight at 7:05 p.m., also at Colusa Casino Stadium.

Marysville took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on Dalton Maxwell’s RBI single which scored Devin Pettengill. But Medford tied the game in the second on Eric Yang’s RBI double, then took the lead in the third on Alex Isola’s RBI single.

Those were two of six hits allowed by Leach, who also had four strikeouts and walked three. Lincoln Clayton pitched hitless ball in relief of Leach over the final two innings.

Marysville had five hits, including doubles by Devin Pettengill and Brock Ephan.

Portland 9, Yuba City 5 The Bears’ losing streak is at five games following the road loss to the Pickles at Walker Stadium. Yuba City had nine hits, two each by Josh Winkler and Dominic Diana. None were of the extra-base variety, however. Portland, meanwhile, received home runs from Zander Clarke and Bobby Kinne, plus a double from Tyler Stofiel.

Bears pitcher Danny Chavez started on the mound and went 5 2/3 innings, recording four strikeouts but surrenderng six earned runs. Noah Gilmore and Tyler Minton pitched in relief.

The game was the first of a threegame series for Yuba City against the Pickles. The teams meet again today and Wednesday, both at 7:05 p.m.

Bears’ third baseman Winkler was named the GWL’s co-player of the week along with Chico pitcher Austin Lee. The 6-foot-2 inch, 180-pound Winkler batted .500 (12 for 24) with no strikeouts in Yuba City’s seven games last week and totaled seven RBI. Four of them came last Wednesday during an 119 loss to Lincoln, a game in which he also had three hits. Winkler entered Monday with a .293 overall batting average with two doubles, a triple, a homer and 11 runs scored.
