Gold Sox swept by Medford

Bears shut out in Portland; host Lincoln today

After playing the first-place Medford Rogues tough for the first two games of the series, the Marysville Gold Sox just couldn’t overcome a disastrous start on Wednesday night.

A double, three singles, three walks and a hit batsman allowed the Rogues to take a commanding 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning and they continued to add on from there to hand the Gold Sox a 13-9 loss and complete the three-game sweep at Colusa Casino Stadium.

Medford built the lead to 11-0 in the third inning before Marysville got on the board by scoring three times. Brock Ephan and Grant Horwitz hit back-to-back RBI doubles, and Jason Dicochea added a run-scoring single in the inning to cut the margin to 11-3.

The Rogues got one run back in the fifth and added another in the seventh to up the lead to 13-3, but the Gold Sox didn’t quit and gave their fans something to cheer

about in the bottom half of the seventh.

Three walks loaded the bases for Andrew Shebolski, who connected for a grand slam with two outs and Joey Mejia followed with a solo home run of his own to cut the lead to 13-8.

The Gold Sox weren’t done as Dicochea led off the ninth with a solo home run, and Marysville put runners on second and third but couldn’t cash them in.

Shebolski and Dicochea finished with three hits each, Horwitz was 2 for 3 and Devin Pettengill went 2 for 5 for the Gold Sox, who out-hit the Rogues 1412 on the night.

Isaiah Rodriguez started the game and allowed five earned runs over ⁄ of an inning to take the loss.

Marysville (6-14) will have today off before playing the rival Yuba City Bears on Friday.

Pickles 9, Bears 0 In Portland, Ore. – The Bears struck out 14 times and were limited to five hits as the Pickles took the rubber match of the threegame series at Walker Sta- dium.

Portland used three singles and a walk to open up a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, and broke the game open by hitting three home runs while scoring six more times in the fourth.

The Pickles finished the night with four home runs in all.

Yuba City didn’t get anything going offensivel­y in the game thanks to the stellar pitching of Portland starter Josh Hendrickso­n, who pitched 8 ⁄ scoreless innings to notch the win. Hendrickso­n struck out 14 and walked one while surrenderi­ng just three hits.

Dominic Diana went 2 for 3 with a walk, T.J. Dove was 2 for 4 and Josh Winkler singled and reached on an error to account for the Bears’ seven baserunner­s.

Ben Purcell allowed nine hits and eight runs – seven earned – over 3 ⁄ innings to take the loss. He struck out three and walked one.

Yuba City (6-15) returns home to host the Lincoln Potters for one game today before beginning a two-game series with the Gold Sox starting Friday.
