Levee funding rally scheduled for today in Yuba City

Yuba-Sutter residents have an opportunity to hear from local officials about the state of levees and the growing need for state funding to fix the damaged areas before the next flood season at a Speak Up Rally for Levee Funding.

Today’s event is scheduled for noon at the Feather River Parkway in Yuba City, just north of the 10th Street Bridge on the west side of the river. The rally is sponsored by Assemblyman James Gallagher and state Sen. Jim Nielsen.

Yuba City Mayor Stan Cleveland and Sutter County Supervisor Dan Flores are also expected to participate in the rally.

Just over a week since the state budget was approved, organizers said the event will discuss how the state did not address funding for levees that were damaged this winter due to the Oroville Dam spillway failure.

“Bottom line summary is the state government and governor are failing to invest in infrastructure,” Gallagher said in a recent article. “They are putting lives in danger. We had some significant damage to levees, with some sites in need of desperate repair. This budget doesn’t fund those necessary repairs.”

With forecasters pre- dicting temperatures to exceed 100 degrees again today, the event, which is expected to see at least 100 people attend, will take place in a shaded area and will have ice water for those in attendance.

Feather River Parkway is north of Highway 20, just off Sutter Street in Yuba City. Rally organizers said there will be signage leading the public to where the event will take place.
