Gold Sox, Bears go down to defeat

- Appeal-Democrat

One big inning just wasn’t enough for the Marysville Gold Sox.

After taking an early lead by scoring four times in the top of the second inning, the Gold Sox couldn’t muster enough offense in a 14-7 loss to the first-place Medford Rogues on Wednesday night at Harry and David Field in Medford, Ore.

Trailing 1-0 at the end of the first, the Gold Sox forged ahead by sending eight batters to the plate in the second. Quinn Ayers, Tom Fuller and Jason Dicochea came through with RBI singles in the inning, and Devin Pettengill drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to give Marysville a 4-1 lead.

Medford reclaimed the lead by scoring four runs of its own in the bottom of the second before Justin Cooney-Sylk and Shea Sbranti knocked in runs in the fourth to put the Gold Sox up 6-5.

The Rouges answered again by tying the game up in the bottom half of the inning and then erupted late to put the game out of reach, scoring three times in both the sixth and seventh innings, and adding another two in the eighth to stretch the lead to 14-6.

Sam Leach hit an RBI double in the ninth inning for Marysville to complete the scoring.

Fuller finished with three hits and scored twice, and Sbranti and Leach added two hits each to lead the way for the Gold Sox at the plate.

Josh Saveah started the game for Marysville and surrendered six earned

runs on seven hits over 3 ⁄ innings in a no-decision. He struck out one and walked three. Travis Weston followed Saveah and took the loss after allowing two runs in 1 ⁄ innings. Weston didn’t allow a hit, but walked two batters while giving up one earned run.

Marysville committed five errors, which led to seven unearned runs by Medford

The Gold Sox (9-17) will look to avoid the threegame sweep when they take on the Rogues (19-8) today in the series finale.

Pickles 7, Bears 5 In Marysville – The Bears fell behind 7-1 before making things interesting late, but they could not complete the comeback in a loss to Portland in front of 302 fans at Colusa Casino Stadium.

Dominic Diana got Yuba City on the board with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first, but the Pickles scored runs in each of the first three innings to take a lead they would hold for good.

Portland added to its advantage by scoring twice in the fifth and one run in both the sixth and the sev- enth before the Bears tried to mount a late-game rally.

One night after scoring all of their runs in the eighth inning to pull out a 5-2 victory over Portland, the Bears nearly did it again as Diana and Josh Winkler both knocked in runs with singles in the eighth. T.J. Dove added an RBI on a sacrifice fly and another run scored on an error to help Yuba City trim the lead to 7-5.

A walk and a hit batsman allowed the Bears also put two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth, but they couldn’t come through with the clutch hit to tie the game and send it to extra innings.

Winkler finished with two hits, and Diana and Creed Smith both singled for Yuba City, which finished the game with only four hits while making four errors defensively.

Ryan Brown took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits over four innings. He struck out six and walked three, and three of his runs were earned.

The Bears (8-18) and Pickles (12-14) will meet again today in Marysville in the rubber match of the three-game set.
