Yuba City police and firefighters will be on high alert for illegal fireworks this weekend and through the Fourth of July.

City spokesman Darin Gale said enforcement efforts will be zero tolerance for illegal fireworks.

“We’d rather not fine people, but illegal fireworks have become a big problem,” Gale said. “If we get a call about illegal fireworks, it will be a $1,000 citation.”

He said people who witness illegal fireworks should call the Yuba City Police

Department’s dispatch line at 8224660.

Gale said the city sent out an automated phone call to 28,000 landlines in the 95991 and 95993 ZIP codes alerting people about “dangerous fireworks,” and another automated call will be sent on Monday.

California fireworks laws divide fireworks into two categories: “dangerous fireworks” and “safe and sane” fireworks.

“Dangerous fireworks” are illegal unless you hold a special license, which is typically issued to pyrotechnic operators who put on Fourth of July and other fireworks displays.

“Safe and sane” fireworks may be sold, purchased and used by the general public, but within strict parameters.

Only licensed retailers can sell “safe and sane” fireworks and it’s illegal to sell or give dangerous fireworks to anyone under 18.
