Area animal shelters full to the brim with scared pets
Officials from county animal shelters in Yuba-Sutter said fireworks caused many dogs and cats to flee their homes.
Diana Barrett, the Sutter Animal Services manager, said 30 dogs came into the shelter because of the fireworks in Yuba City and Sutter County.
“It was fairly significant,” Barrett said.
She said no dogs were injured during their escapes, and she believes that is due in part to the Yuba City safe and sane campaign.
Deneen Barnhill, Yuba County Animal Care Services supervisor, said people have been bringing in stray dogs.
“We are currently taking a lot over the counter because people are catching them and bringing them in,” Barnhill said.
She said the shelter is full to the brim, and the department is inundated with service calls.
“Every year, every day of the year, it is a big issue,” she said.
Barnhill said she recommends if a person’s pet is missing to check Petharbor.com.
Barrett said one unusual case from Yuba City will require owners to contact her: a stray husky-German shepherd mix was picked up by people traveling to Redding. She said the dog is tri-colored and about 85 pounds.
