A man and woman from Colusa died Saturday morning after they were involved in a head-on collision on Highway 20 over the Sutter Causeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The identities of a 48-year-old male driver and 58-year-old female passenger who died at the scene from their injuries remain unknown until next of kin are notified. Highway 20 was closed for several hours following the incident and was reopened around 2 p.m.

Around 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jacob Correia, 18, of Meridian was traveling in a Ford Expedition toward Colusa County over the Sutter Causeway at high speed when he struck a GMC Sierra driven by 34-year-old Cody Arnold of Yuba City. The crash sent Arnold’s vehicle into a farm tractor on the highway, driven by a 25-year- old Travis Perse of Sutter.

After Correia’s collision with the back of Arnold’s vehicle, his Expedition reportedly swerved into oncoming traffic where he was hit by the Chevrolet S-10 driven by the 48-yearold man from Colusa.

John Moell, 19, of Redding was driving a Toyota Corolla behind the Chevrolet at the time of the accident and was unable to stop his vehicle before colliding into the back of the Chevrolet, according to CHP.

Correia was transported to Rideout Memorial Hospital via helicopter to be treated for his injuries.

Jodie Beck, public information officer for CHP Yuba-sutter, said it’s unclear why Correia failed to slow down when approaching the slower-moving GMC Sierra in front of him.

Impaired driving was not suspected to be a factor in the collision, nor were drugs and alcohol, Beck said.
