Errors cost Yuba in loss to West Valley

Yuba College’s baseball team closed out the Gary Engelken Memorial Tournament with a 10-7 loss to West Valley College on Saturday afternoon at Colusa Casino Stadium in Marysville.

The 49ers fell behind 4-0 in the top of the first, but answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning and three more runs in the second to take a 5-4 lead. However, the Vikings took advantage of four costly errors by Yuba to forge ahead and pull away for the win in the finale of the three-day tournament.

Kreighton Tsuruda-gaspar led the way at the plate for the 49ers by going 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles and four RBIS. Daniel Hale went 2 for 2 with a double, Joe Ramos was 3 for 5 with an RBI, and Hayden Reyna finished 1 for 3 and scored three times in the loss.

Up next for Yuba (4-5) is a nonleague game against Shasta College on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Marysville.

HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING Honkers, Falcons advance

In Sacramento – Though a computer malfunctio­n made for a long day on the mat, Yuba City and River Valley High’s wrestling teams both fared well at the Tri-county Conference Championsh­ips at Inderkum High.

No team scores were available after the meet, but the regularsea­son champion Honkers saw eight of their grapplers make it to the finals and 11 finish in the top four.

Topping the list of performers for Yuba City were Keola Abreu (108 pounds), Jonathan Mcguire (128), Kirino Delafuente (134), Dylan Valderrama (172) and Chris Divas (184), each of whom placed first in their weight class to be crowned conference champions individual­ly.

Placing first and winning conference titles for River Valley were Adan Nava (145), Andres Nava (152), Jonathan Sanchez (160) and Gabe Bruce (195). Bruce’s strong tournament also led to him being voted the TCC’S Heavyweigh­t MVP.

Marc Avila (115), Austin Cook (122) and Robert Teal (222) each made it to the finals while finishing second, Trevor Thornton (140) placed third, and Anthony Sparks (147) and Nathaniel George (197) both took fourth to round out the leaders for the Honkers.

Kenya Rodrigues (106), Erick Sandoval (170) and Julian Morales (285) posted third-place finishes, and Mohammed Aziz (120), Alex Sandoval (126), Eric Martinez (132), Nuvjit Johl (138) and Daniel Morales (220) all took fourth to complete the top performers for the Falcons.

The top four placers in each weight class will now advance to the Sac-joaquin Section Division III Championsh­ips, which will be held next Friday and Saturday at River Valley.

In girls competitio­n, Yuba City’s Karina Ramirez (103) finished first, River Valley’s Natalee Goode (120) placed second and Yuba City’s Yazmeen Lopez (123) was fourth to lead the way for the locals.

Though she didn’t wrestle on Saturday due to an injury, River Valley senior and defending CIF state champion Alexis Young was voted the TCC’S Most Outstandin­g Wrestler for the third straight year. She will compete at next week’s Sac-joaquin Section Girls Masters at Mcnair High in Stockton.

The Honkers’ junior varsity team finished second. Nathaniel Ramirez (108), Aiden Davis (128) and Emiliano Murillo (170) each finished in first place, Kevin Duong (108) took second and Isaias Adame (122) was third for Yuba City.

River Valley took third as a team behind a first-place finish by Luis Cardoza (152) and a third-place showing by Evan Bramer (145).

GIRLS SOCCER Marysville 10, Mesa Verde 0

In Marysville – Anastacia Bancroft scored four more goals as the Indians blew past the Mavericks for an easy Golden Empire League victory.

Bancroft’s four-goal outburst gave her 35 on the year, which is the fourth most in the Sac-joaquin Section.

Bryseida Camolinga, Leslie Velazquez, Kaitlee Ellyson, Corrine Mathews, Tayler Freeman and Ellie Bell also scored goals for Marysville, which qualified for the playoffs by finishing in the top four in the GEL.

The Indians (11-10-1, 5-5-1) close out the regular season against Lindhurst on Tuesday at Yuba College.
