The sound of vinyl records and the unmistakable smell of comfort food brought a Plumas Street corner to life, as the monthly Beats & Eats event was held in downtown Yuba City on Sunday afternoon.

Jacob Geraldo, owner of The Corner To-go restaurant, is the brain child of the monthly record swap with a breakfast and lunch buffet, which collaborates with neighboring Cilantro’s Mexican restaurant and Krazy Katz Vintage & Vinyl record store.

Complete with a DJ outside the restaurant, Geraldo said Beats & Eats attracted roughly 50 people who were either brought in by the sound of music or regular diners of the two restaurants who were welcomed to partake in the novel event.

“The point of this is to just get the community together,” Geraldo said. “We offer people the chance to pick out a record, put it on some speakers and hear it for yourself. It’s really, really cool to give people the opportunity to pick out something from their past and hear how special it sounds.”

Stevie Ramirez, who helped to DJ for Beats & Eats, said events like this are typically held in larger cities and provide an opportunity for a range of different people to check out good music and fill their stomachs.

“This is great,” Ramirez said. “It’s a type of event you can bring friends, family or your kids. Hopefully we can get a nice little following and get more vendors out here. Unfortunately, Yuba City is hard to push stuff like this but hopefully this can keep building up.”

Geraldo said when he first started, he restricted the monthly event to the corner of his store but that customers recommended expanding the event to something a bit larger.

After recruiting Cilantro’s, which The Corner To-go shares a hallway with, the two restaurants were complimented by Krazy Katz, which helps to supply the majority of records at the event.

Even when Beat & Eats is not filling the street corner with the sound of music, The Corner To-go provides a selection of records, couresty of Krazy Katz,

Geraldo said the plan is to grow the event every month and hopes to close down Center Street.

Beat & Eats is held the second Sunday of each month at The Corner ToGo and Cilantro’s restaurants on the corner of Plumas and Center streets in downtown Yuba City.
