Tractor-trailer tips over, kills man next to his pickup
California Highway Patrol Sgt. Evan Beaver investigates the scene of a fatal collision involving a tractor-trailer and a pickup truck on Monday at Erle Road and Highway 70 in Olivehurst.
A Fairfield man was killed after a tractor-trailer tipped over and collided with his pickup truck at 1:15 p.m. Monday in Yuba County, the California Highway Patrol said.
The unidentified 46-year-old man, who had parked on the shoulder of the southbound on-ramp to Highway 70 at Erle Road, had stopped to work on his 2001 Dodge Ram when a 2016 Western Star tractor-trailer westbound on Erle Road turned left to enter the freeway on-ramp, tipped over and crushed the man between the two vehicles, the CHP said.
The 54-year-old driver of the tractortrailer, Christine Straub of Grass Valley, was transported to Rideout Memorial Hospital with moderate injuries, CHP Sgt. Evan Beaver said.
Eric Bishop, 17, of Fairfield, was sitting in the Dodge during the collision and was uninjured, the CHP said.
Passerby Irene Guzman of Olivehurst said she pulled up moments after the collision and stopped to help.
“I pulled over because no one else was stopping and I saw a young man leaned over the guy under the truck,” Guzman said. “He said it was his dad, and it was really hard to see, but I’d want someone to stop for me or my family, if we were in a situation like that.”
Beaver said the investigation into why the tractor-trailer tipped over continues.
The tractor-trailer was carrying gravel, which spilled onto the pickup and the shoulder. The on-ramp was closed for several hours, though no lanes were closed on the highway.
