YC boys basketball upends RV’S title hopes

Falcons host River City for TCC crown on Wednesday

With a chance to clinch at least a first-place share of the Tri-county Conference title, the River Valley High boys basketball team was upended by crosstown rival Yuba City 71-66 at Honker Gym on Monday night.

The Falcons quickly found themselves in a 15-point hole to begin the game but battled back with a 23-point second period to lead by two heading into the half.

As play resumed, the Honkers once again sprang to life and led by as much as 12 in the third period.

Like they did before, the Falcons clawed their way back into the game. But unlike before, River Valley was unable to take the lead and only got within two points of the Honkers.

River Valley’s Sergio Garcia led the team with 19 points, while Charnpreet Bansal had 13 and Tarn Lally finished with 12.

Yuba City’s Bryce Rogers led all players with 28 points, while Keron Blackwell notched a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Illyaas Rafiq finished second on the team with 16 points and Jaipreet Virk had 11.

Falcons’ coach Mark Wright commended the play of the Honkers and said his team was unable to execute.

Honkers’ coach Mamo Rafiq said “The energy in the building was electric and our players did not want to allow River Valley to win the TCC championsh­ip on our home court.”

River Valley (18-8, 9-2) will host River City (18-8, 9-2) for the TCC title on Wednesday.

Yuba City (15-12, 9-3) wrapped up their season on Monday and sit directly behind River Valley and River City in the TCC standings.

The Honkers junior varsity team (15-9, 8-4) beat the Falcons (18-9, 8-3) 60-38.

Nathan Flores led the Honkers with 16 points, while Mason Lomeli finished with 12.

The Falcons Karan Judge had six points and seven rebounds, while Joh Kroeger finished with four points and nine rebounds.

The Honkers freshman team (16-10, 7-5) defeated River Valley 57-48.
