Marysville man gets 180 days in county jail for robbing AT&T store
A Marysville man who turned himself in after breaking into an AT&T store last August and stealing merchandise was sentenced Tuesday in Yuba County Superior Court to jail time and a period of mandatory supervision.
Jason Stapleton, 39, was arrested Aug. 11, 2017, and charged with seconddegree burglary and malicious mischief.
At about 4:30 a.m., the Marysville Police Department responded to the AT&T wireless store located in the 900 block of E Street for a burglary alarm. A responding officer found the store’s front glass door broken and a large boulder on the ground.
Then at about 5:06 a.m., Stapleton walked into the Yuba County Jail and told staff that he had just burglarized the store. When officers arrived, Stapleton reportedly told them he was their suspect. He told police he broke into the store because he was afraid he was going to be assaulted by his enemies and wanted to go to jail, according to court documents.
Stapleton was found in possession of multiple wireless phone-related products with AT&T logos printed on the box covers.
He pleaded guilty to second-degree burglary, and his malicious mischief charge was dropped.
His sentence will require him to serve 180 days in county jail, followed by 900 days of mandatory supervision. He will also be required to complete a minimum of six months of residential drug treatment.
