Bat killed by cat in Live Oak tests positive for rabies

A dead bat brought into a Live Oak residence by a cat last week tested positive for rabies, according to the Sutter Animal Services Authority.

The cat gifted its owners with the bat in a home near the 3400 block of Cannon Way in Live Oak last Saturday, according to a press release.

The cat was vaccinated for rabies, but as a precaution will be quarantine­d to ensure its own health as well as that of the occupants, according to the release.

Residents should contact Sutter Animal Services Authority at 822-7375 immediatel­y if there is a live or dead bat inside or outside their home. People should never touch bats, especially if appearing sick or dead, according to the press release, and pet owners are urged to keep their animals’ rabies vaccinatio­ns up to date.

The Centers for Disease Control lists these tips on its website: “Avoid contact with wild animals. Put screens on all windows and use chimney caps. Place draftguard­s beneath doors to ensure that all doors to the outside close tightly. Do not keep doors or unscreened windows open, especially if people are sleeping. Evacuate any room with a live bat and close the door.”

The existing sidewalk on the Fifth Street Bridge is closed for three weeks, from March 5 to March 26, for the constructi­on of one of the future shafts for the new bridge.

Pedestrian­s and bicyclists are advised to use an alternativ­e Colusa Avenue route.

During the work, crews will remove a portion of the existing sidewalk to allow for the constructi­on of the new shaft, according to a statement from the city of Yuba City.
