Lip sync battle to benefit children

- By Jessica Hice jhice@appealdemocrat.com

Imagine the lights dimming in a crowded room as a ’90s pop hit begins to play.

Onstage, 70-year-old twins Sharon Cornils and Karen Cartoscelli, members of the Yuba City Kiwanis Club Foundation, are decked out with gold jewelry, baggy pants and blinged-out dollar sign rings on their fingers as they lip sync and groove.

That’s the sort of performance that guests will see at the Yuba-sutter Lip Sync Battle on March 9 at Colusa Casino Resort from 7 p.m.-10 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the Shady Creek Outdoor Education Foundation as part of the Sutter County Outdoor Education Program, offering scholarships and health care to school children for more than 25 years.

Marie Teria, Yuba City Kiwanis Club president, said the group has been practicing for two weeks.

“We are going to have so much fun,” Teria said.

“Bring your friends, bring a date, just don’t bring your boring Uncle Fred! This Yuba-sutter event is going to be a blast and you’re not going to want to miss it,” reads the Yuba-sutter Lip Sync Battle website.

Other contestants include individuals like Dennis Hauck, who is in the running for Sutter County Sheriff, and groups from Yuba City Racquet and Health Club, Kidding Around Yoga and Comfort Keepers.

General admission is $35. Table sponsorship is available; $300 for four seats, $600 for 8 seats and $1,000 for 10 seats. Reserved seats include appetizers, dessert and a business name mentioned on stage. All guests can vote for acts they love.
