Sutter’s Heryford makes it to 2nd day at state meet

Five local wrestlers competed at the 46th annual CIF State Boys Wrestling Championships at the Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield on Friday and Saturday, a tournament widely regarded as the toughest in the nation.

Topping the list of performers was Sutter High junior Jimmy Heryford, the Northern Section champion at 113 pounds, who was the only local to make it to the second day of competition.

Heryford won his first match on Friday before losing his second. He then rattled two more wins and lost his last one to finish 3-2 at the tourney and just miss out on reaching the medal stand.

Sutter junior Zac Hancock, the section champion at 145 pounds, went 2-2 at the tournament, losing his first match before bouncing back to win two straight. He lost his final one on Friday to finish 2-2 at the tournament.

Sophomore Billy Thornton (126 pounds) and fellow sophomore Max Gipson (195) both went 1-2 in Bakersfield for Sutter.

Gridley senior Jace Villapania, who was second in the Northern Section at 182 pounds, went 0-2 at state to round out the local competitors.

TRACK & FIELD Indians post solid marks at Sac State

In Sacramento – Marysville High sent eight of its boys athletes to compete at the 14th annual Sacramento State Track Classic.

The top placer for the Indians was Tim Spence, who took fourth in the shot put with a throw of 43 feet, 5 inches, and sixth in the discus with a mark of 136-10.

Ethan Maycroft placed fifth in the pole vault (12-0), Gavin Battista was ninth in the pole vault (12-0), and John Garrison finished 10th in the 110 high hurdles (17.59 seconds) to round out the athletes who placed in the top 10 for Marysville.

Gary Walker took 11th in the 200 (24.16) and 23rd in the 100 (11.57), Eugene Barajas placed 14th in the 110 high hurdles (19.68), Pierce Desmond was 28th in the 800 (2:12.86) and Jose Aceves finished 29th in the discus (102-8).

TRAP SHOOTING Sutter’s Leong takes 1st In Martinez – Sutter’s Jaren Leong placed first in the varsity division at the California Youth Shooting Sports Association Olympic Bunker state championships on Feb. 25.

Leong hit 93 of 100 targets, while teammate Wyatt Camara took fourth individually by shooting 83 of 125 targets.

Sutter’s Bryce Morris also placed fourth in the junior varsity division by hitting 60 of 125 targets at the event.
